Baling out poop – beware those with a nervous disposition avoid this post! #DDH
During the past six months I have blogged and vlogged about the highs and the lows of DDH. Yet yesterday sank to a new level. Us spica mums are more than a bit paranoid about keeping our casts clean, we tweet and discuss it on our facebook group, we share advice and tips and I expect silently exhale a bit when it happens to someone else and our cast is still ok. I wasn’t too worried about that side of things this time, afterall I am a veteran, I’ve done 18 weeks in cast. Yet it seems that just lulled me into a false sense of security
None of us want our children to stink of pee and worse……
And yet
Whilst I was having a well deserved lie in bed with a cup of coffee Erin was calling her daddy, he was just finishing getting dressed himself so left her a minute. When the calling become a bit more urgent he went into the lounge where she was sitting on her beanbag. Suddenly Lee was frozen to the spot, saying Oh my god, oh crap, oh my god.
‘What’ I shouted, no reply except more expletives. I launched myself down the stairs three at a time and came face to face with a sight I never want to see again.
Erin was literally up to her armpits in poo, it was oozing from the top of the cast and the nappy hole area. We started to bale out like you would a sinking ship. Dignity and rational thought escaped us both as we were literally hands in trying to scoop out the poo.
Now remember we are working with a small area as the cast is above belly button and down to ankles. The poop was literally bubbling over the top like a witches cauldron.
Then we realised it was a losing battle, the damage was done. Another trip to hospital awaited us. It being a sunday nothing can happen – please do remember if you are ever going to need surgery or break a bone its best to do it Monday – Friday 9 to 5.
Fast forward to now, Monday morning as we sit awaiting the phone call to see what is going to be done. Erin is shouting for shreddies but is nil by mouth until we know whether another general is required.

this will one day be a story you can tell with a smile, although I don’t think it’ll be one for Erin’s first boyfriend! I have no idea what you’re going through but I’m sure other spica families will benefit from your honesty and foritude :-)
