Having a good breakfast is so important for children to do well in school. I lost count of the number of times that students had told me that they hadn’t eaten before school. Especially secondary school children. Most of us wouldn’t dream of sending our young children off to school without a good breakfast. Yet i know that this is not the case once they hit those teen years. The most frequent excuse I would hear is lack of time.
My students would prefer the extra 10 mins in bed, especially in the winter when it is cold outside. Those teens then grab sugary snacks by break time ass they are hungry and it plays havoc with their blood sugars causing them to have highs and lows.
This is not good for learning and also makes children tired and lack concentration. One way I beat the skipping breakfast is by having easy options at home for them. Instant porridge pots like these from Moma Foods just require water to be added. They can even then be eaten on the way to the bus stop!
I will also make mine banana and egg omelette when I have time myself as they get bored of the same cereals. To make these I smash up a banana and mix with two eggs and make them like pancakes in the frying pan.
Smoothies are also any easy drink on the go option and here is a frugal recipe where you can make a smoothie for 12p.
It is important that teenagers eat a good breakfast as it will set them up for the day and put them in the optimum zone for learning.
