It seems both Trump and Dear Deidre have thrust abortion into the headlines again this week.
Casually sat on the sofa writing blog posts and half watching / listening to This Morning when I catch Dear Deidre on a phone in. One problem being shared caused me to gasp. Politically you’d have to have been hiding under a very large rock not to hear that abortion has been in the news this week. Trump and a room full of men signed a piece of paper that ultimately represses women. Now he isn’t the first president to support this particular policy but signing it on his first day in office was certainly a statement of intent.
I am pro choice and I don’t believe that anyone has the right to tell a woman whether she can or can’t have an abortion. More than that I don’t care what the reason for wanting that abortion is. It is a woman’ choice and I will argue that until the end. However even I was shocked to hear a woman on This Morning asking for advice because she was considering an abortion as it clashed with her booked wedding.
Now to put that into context (before you hyperventilate like I almost did). The couple in question have booked and paid for a wedding abroad with many family and friends joining them on the trip. The bride to be has unexpectedly fallen pregnant. The baby would be due at the same time as the wedding so they would need to cancel the wedding.
They are looking into having an abortion because of this clash of dates. She went as far as to say that if the wedding was not booked they would not be considering an abortion.
All of this shocked and saddened me.
This problem being shared on a prime time TV show does nothing for helping and empowering woman. If anything it gives those Trump supporters validation that abortion is based on material matters. Abortion is probably one of hardest decisions for many women, something that would be a long thought out process and today’s Dear Deidre just suggested trivialised it. I don’t think it should have been included in the section.
The media like to tell us that it is young irresponsible girls having abortions, women that don’t bother using contraception. Or worse still women having repeat abortions as a form of birth control. Or women making a lifestyle choice. Using this example on TV just reinforces that women have abortions for convenience and that damages every single women that needs or wants an abortion in the future.
We don’t need Trump and his stupid policies on abortion, we don’t need a room full of men making decisions about women’s bodies. But at the same time we don’t need sensationalist TV reporting to legitimise that woman make important life changing decisions on relatively small matters like it clashing with a holiday.
Pro Choice empowers women. Pro Choice is right. This reporting today made women look selfish and immature and did not help women across the globe who are fighting for equality and rights over their body. Thanks This Morning for showing a very small representation of women that many will believe is the norm.
