Love being outdoors and heading off to camping trips? Who says you can’t do it without your kids too? Discover these actionable tips and tricks to make camping with them an enjoyable and stress free experience! If you are new to camping consider trying a family festival, Erin and I are heading to Camp Bestival this summer and we are very excited. There is plenty to do for everyone and it is a great introduction to sleeping under the stars.
Choose the Bedding Wisely
When choosing the bedding for your camping trip, keep in mind certain aspects including the weather and comfort level. Avoid getting large sleeping bags for your kids- the empty space at the bottom can get them cold easily. There are plenty designed for children including these sleeping bags available from Millets.
Look For Options
When camping with kids, one of the most important things to remember is to always look out for alternatives. Start by camping in some campgrounds or national parks that are close by and have better temperature control.
Unlike at home, you cannot control the temperature when you’re outdoors, and it can fluctuate and get intense real quick. Carrying a few extra layers of clothing, especially for kids, is always a good idea in case the temperature drops down more than you had expected. There are many brands that are designed especially for this outdoor living including Berghaus which sells outdoor wear and also camping gear including tents.
Make Them Help
Whether it is setting up the tent or preparing the meal, get your little ones to be more involved in the entire process of camping- it’ll not just divide your task but also get them interested in the whole idea of doing it.
Carry Some Games
It makes sense to always carry with you some board or card games on your camping trip if you’re going with your little ones. There may be situations where you may be busy setting up things and they may be bored, or just that the weather may require you to stay in the tent or the trailer, and they’ll get bored, and that’s when the games may help!
Nighttime may not be that scary for you, but it is, especially for younger kids. Make sure you carry some string lights and lanterns to make the situation more cosy and comfortable for your little one(s). At a festival, this helps identify your tent and pitch on the walk back too. Add a flag and go all out making your base a pretty place.
Educate your kids about fire safety and other safety precautions when you’re camping. Emphasize the importance of not wandering away from the campsite alone. Also make sure you carry the bug spray, sunscreen and first aid kit along.
Make Meals Fun
Kids can totally strop out when they’re hungry, and if that sounds relatable, make sure you pack enough snacks and eatables. Also get your kids to help you prepare the meals- even if they’re just the heat and add water type ones- it’ll get them to enjoy gobbling it down even more.
Following these simple steps can help your kids behave and actually enjoy themselves during the camping trip and become an outdoor lover like you!
We hope that these tips and hacks to make camping with your kids’ stress free will enable everyone to enjoy a different type of holiday.
