Chloe is very sporty, she has had regional trials for hockey this season and sport is her pretty much everything to her. She is a grade 5 dancer, doing pointe, ballet, tap and modern. She represents the school in most teams hockey and rounders being her favourite, she does Dof E. Last year she was unlucky and broke her ankle after coming out of cast she broke her metatarsals it was tough for her. She then developed back pains and had physio for several months. She was also diagnosed with hypermobility. Chloe is a tall but slight 14 year old. Taller than me, very strong with a six pack to envy. She was invited to join an elite sports programme through her school as she is on their gifted and talented pathway. It is designed to teach those with sporting abilities how to train and how to look after your body whilst pushing yourself. Therefore it is somewhat ironic that she has been injured during the session. I know that she is competitive so she probably pushed herself too hard.
On Tuesday after school she complained that her shoulder was really hurting. Wednesday saw no improvement and I was able to get her an emergency appointment with our GP, she gently touched Chloe who was in so much pain she shot up. She then diagnosed Chloe with whiplash. Something I thought only happened after a car crash. However it seems that Chloe probably over extended when using free weights and has sustained an injury to her trapezium. That is basically the muscle that holds the neck and shoulder and connects to her back. She is currently on codiene which is barely touching her pain. The GP has said that more physio will probably be required. I can’t believe her bad luck. She looks defeated she can barely move off the sofa and she says the codeine isn’t making much difference.
Chloe had already toyed with the idea of physio as a career I can see that she will be an expert before she even starts the course!
I would love any advice on how to help her. If you have ever had whiplash what helps?
