A big smile playing on her lips as Erin talks excitedly about both the upcoming school disco and one of her new friends parties that is being held at the weekend. These are the dreams of a little girl who is so social, a little girl with a big heart and lovely friends. With a large ish age gap between her siblings Erin is wise beyond her years. She joins in with adult vocabulary and makes us giggle with her advanced understanding. She begs her big sister and brother to play with her and she is often brushed off as they would rather be in their rooms doing teen and tween things. Sometimes I feel she misses out on playtime but thankfully this is a gap that school and her friends now fill.
Party invitations litter her bag and she plans what she will wear, the school disco required a skirt that twirled when she danced and a little bag for her sweet money. She put on her boots complete with her orthotics and strode to the school hall. She then looked at her friends feet and I saw that smile drop for a moment.
The disco was fun as she gorged on haribo and span about with her friends. I watched from the sidelines as a parent helper who was left opening sweets and stopping children from crashing into each other at a breakneck speed.
She walked home with me, her little hand slipped inside mine like it always is. We battle the world together her and me and she really is my sidekick, my little lady. We have already been through so much together because of her hip surgeries and other health issues. As I tucked her in that night she whispered that she wanted new shoes for the birthday party. She had a request and I knew it would only be a matter of time before she asked. It was for sparkly shoes like her friends wear. Erin doesn’t own many pairs of shoes and the shoes she does own are chosen for practical and medical needs. They need to contain her insoles that helps her ankle stay in position because of her hypermobility. They need to be sturdy and supportive and hold her bendy foot in position. We haven’t chosen shoes based on fashion, colours or on their sparkly qualities and Erin has begun to notice this. The first pair of shoes we bought after her hip operations were kickers boots. As she had eyed up Lelli kellies I was looking for lace up boots as per her surgeons instructions.
However time has moved on, bones have healed and just maybe now is the time for party shoes, I promised her that she could choose a pair that were fine for parties and her little face beamed once more. We made sure that she was fitted by a qualified trained expert at Brantano and then she was off to search for the sparkliest pair in her size that fitted her unique little feet.
We are now disco ready!
