Both Erin and Dylan have lets say interesting shaped feet, they both bend somewhat and have very flat feet. Dylan was recently diagnosed with flat feet and whilst many have this is has been causing pain for Dylan. He has also been diagnosed with both severs disease (not really a disease as such) and Osgood schlatters in his ankles and knees. He is under podiatry and we have an appointment today to decide a course of action, it is likely he will start wearing orthotics like his sister. In his day to day it means that he trips over himself and his legs ache.
I have always paid good attention to their feet, all three children wear expensive supportive footwear and this is probably most important for Erin due to her hypermobility and DDH. She generally wears hi tops with Kickers and shoes with ankle supports being a firm favourite as they accommodate her insoles well.
Last week we were invited to Brantano to make use of their fitting service and choose a pair of shoes. This is great timing as both Chloe and Dylan needed Back to School shoes and Brantano sell top brands like Clarks, Hush Puppies and so on. We were greeted as we entered the store and asked if we needed help. I requested the children to be measured and we had a great fitting experience. Each of them were measured using the Clarks measuring tool and their measurements were written down. The children were each given a little pack which included the card informing them which size they required. Then styles to suit the children’s feet were discussed. The older two have wide feet they were invited to try lace up’s or slip ons.
Erin was measured first and I was confident that I knew her sizing and I was right. Erin was looking for weekend shoes as she has her school shoes already. Chloe was next to be measured and again we knew she was a six – which is the same size as me. This has advantages as we can now share going out shoes – she has her eye on my new Michael Kors shoe boots I treated myself too last week! Chloe is starting sixth form in a few weeks and the uniform is smart wear and therefore she was looking for a a smart flat shoe to wear with trousers and skirts. She quickly found what she was looking for and selected a black patent T bar for just £24.99 She is going to rock the look at sixth form. Business wear is a good bridge I think between school and workplace. They are not allowed to wear a top that shows their shoulders or belly and this is caused a few giggles as Chloe tops always show one or the other! It is costing me a bit to kit her out!
Finally it came to Dyl and like the girls I was confident that he was a size 4. He desperately needs new school shoes and I had already briefed him that he was not to look at the trainers as he had to choose Clarks school shoes. I gave him a free rein on style. He stepped up to be measured and I was gobsmacked to see he was a 6.5 It was a huge shock, I knew that he had grown loads in the past six months. He is ahead taller than many of his friends and people that haven’t seen him for a while get a shock. But I had failed to recognise that he had grown several sizes in a few short months.
I took full advantage of the fitting service and got the assistant to check and double check Dylan’s choice and I now feel really confident that he has the correct shoes for his feet. It proves that regular fitting is really important especially when the children are growing. I felt bad that has been wearing shoes too small but now he is sorted and I won’t let it be so long in-between his next fitting!
