I often write about teenagers and how much enjoy this stage of parenting. I have lots of fun with my teenagers although just sometimes they absolutely make me question how I have raised them! Take Dylan for example, he is a quiet, sensitive soul who is logical with comic timing on his observational humor. He makes me laugh easily and they are often proper belly laughs. But sometimes it is the little things that mystify our teenagers!
I left to go to London first thing Thursday and he had a couple of simple tasks. He needed to look after the dog and feed himself. He would arrive home from school and need to fend for himself for a few hours. Little sister has out of the picture at her best friends house.
I messaged Dyl late afternoon to check he has home and everything was ok. As you can see from the following exchange he is a teen of few words in messages! I rang him and he told me we had a missed parcel. I asked him where it was and he replied he couldn’t read the handwriting so then sent me the following photo for me to interpret for him!
Our bins are in our locked garden and not near the gate!
Of course, I have now come home to washing up indicating that all Dylan ate last night was pizza, oh and he made a hot chocolate for himself!
Teens are a funny species and teenage hormones seem to amplify the traits that once appeared cute and adorable. Here is a guide to identify some of the more common personality types. Does your teen have any of these traits?
- Beauty Queens and Kings Yes, there are indeed beauty kings out there. Look for those who follow fashion, wear branded clothing and spend a fortune on beauty products and treatments. Image is very important to these teens and they often have exact requirements of the brands they will wear, Mainline Menswear can often dress your teenager for success and they include brands like CP Company, Aquascutum and Luke 1977 which are firm favourites in our house.
- Dramatics These teens overemphasise everything and to them, nothing is ordinary. A broken nail is a total disaster and a missed bus, a tragedy. Their dramas are accompanied by expansive gestures and loud monologues.
- Health Nuts These individuals live for exercise and diet. Think gym, jogging, health food and protein shakes and that’s them in a nutshell. They wear sporty clothes, normally have loads of energy and be seen in their Adidas Orginals!
- Perfectionists Their rooms are neat and their pencils are arranged by color. Their text books are stacked in alphabetical order and everything has its place.
Teen years can be difficult and most teenagers are a mix of the above types. Understanding their motivation and drive can go a long way to better communication and relationships in general. The important thing is to remember that they will grow up and things will improve.
