When did you last get your child’s eyes tested? Did you know that 80% of what a child learns in school is visual. That is a huge majority. As a school governor I see this regularly when I am visiting classrooms. The children are modelled the lesson objective before being sent away to put it into practice. Then it is back to the carpet for more teacher led teaching. Therefore it is so important that we, as parents, ensure our children’s eyesight is being regularly checked.
Eye tests for children are free and parents just need to take them along for regular tests. There really is no excuse is there? I was concerned about Erin’s eyes prior to her starting school as she had a bit of a lazy eye. This is down to her hypermobility but thankfully it corrected itself over the course of a few months and during this time she had regular tests.
As a parent if we notice any of the following we should mention it at the next eye check:
- Rubbing eyes
- Sitting close to the TV
- complaining of headaches
- losing their place when reading
- Failing to finish work, or avoiding doing work
On their own these may not be cause for concern or a sign of poor vision but they are things that we should take notice of. A quick trip to Specsavers will give you the answers needed.
Having an eye test is a non invasive procedure. The children are put at ease and the optician knows exactly how to chat and explain things to younger children. The child will be asked to identify some letters from a screen and each eye will be tested.
If glasses are prescribed your little one will have a choice of a huge range. I started wearing glasses at primary school and only wish I could have had such a great selection. I have enjoyed how Disney are representing girls in their more recent films and this is sure to become a huge Disney hit just before Christmas. When I asked Erin about the film she already knew that it was coming out. If I was getting her glasses about now it would be this range she would pick to be ahead of the crowd!
