Do you remember opening that envelope of results after sitting your GCSE’s? This year the results in the envelopes looked rather different and in 2018 they will look different again. If you are a parent of a GCSE student now is time to get your head around the new GCSE’s. Furthermore, now is also the time to look at how you can support your child to ensure they can achieve their predicted grades and this could include using personal tutors.
GCSE’s have undergone a radical change. This year saw the introduction of results being numerical in English and Maths rather than letters. The old C grade has been replaced with a standard pass which is a number 4. A ‘good’ C grade is now a 5 with 6 being roughly equal to a B and so on.
One of the reasons behind this huge change is to differentiate between the grades. The very top students will be awarded a 9 (the highest level) and this is for students achieving approximately above 94% in all exams papers for that subject. It is higher than the old A*.
2018 will see this system being rolled out for all subjects and not just English and Maths. It is an exciting change and gives those very able students the chance to show that they are exceptional students. The boundaries between grades can be very close, there is nothing much more frustrating for students and teachers when they miss the next grade by a point or two.
