Hidden Wonders Book Review

Encouraging your tween to read in a home full of iPads, Youtube, Tik Tok, and audiobooks can be a challenge. As a tween I loved reading and got through book after book. A friend reminded me of a favourite series just today when she shared a meme on Facebook and I spotted the ‘First term at Trebizon’. Reading should be a joy and as such I search out books that I think Erin will enjoy and this includes non fiction books like ‘Hidden Wonders’ from Lonely Planet.

Tips to Encourage Reading in Tweens

Erin still really enjoys reading with me or her dad. At ten years old it is easy to expect a tween to read independently and of course Erin can physically do this – but sharing half an hour reading together and chatting about the book always encourages reading.

Following on from the first idea I find that if I make time for us both to be quiet and read it helps. If I model the behaviours I want it works. If I am busy cooking, or I am on my laptop why should I expect Erin to stop and read too?

Choose interesting books for your tweens. I look at new releases and what are recommended reads in book shops. There are so many amazing books out there it is a case of finding a genre that the child enjoys.

Erin really enjoys historical books and finding out about inspirational people. Over the years this has helped her massively in school too. A new release that we have been looking at is Hidden Wonders by Lonely Planet, take a journey into the unknown and discover the planet’s wildest and most wonderful sights. Paddle through the eerie glowworm caves of New Zealand, ride with the wild horses of the Namib desert, swing off the end of the world in Ecuador, and be amazed at hundreds more wonders you never knew existed!

This title shares some of the world’s secret places and will give your tweens a quest for adventure and open their eyes that little bit further. Erin was sucked into the pages and she delighted in telling me about the places she wants to see. Reading gifts children an inquisitive and curious mind and helps them discover more about the planet in which we live. Hidden Wonders makes for a great present and is available for £14.99. It is a lovely hardback with great illustrations and photos to accompany the text. Whether it is the upside down house in China, the Postojna Caves or the pink water of Lake Hillier there will be places that you have never heard of but now want to see! Finally, my last tip to encourage reading is to set a time for regular reading and have a nice place to curl up with a book. Erin has a reading nook under the stairs! Plus she also loves sitting in our giant bean bag chair with a book.
