3 Important Criteria to Consider When Choosing a Gym in CNMI

It’s tough to stay in shape if you don’t have the right exercise equipment at home. But you don’t necessarily have to invest in expensive workout machines to get around the problem. Instead, you can look for a gym that offers all the necessary facilities to help you reach your personal health goals.

Fortunately, there is an active community of fitness enthusiasts in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, which means there are a handful of gyms in CNMI you could go to. But with a good number of fitness centers to choose from, it can be hard to decide which one to enroll in. To get a better idea of what to look for, read on for three things to keep in mind when deciding which facility, you should sign up for.

Transportation

It can be difficult to get around the Northern Marianas due to the lack of public transportation options. As such, it’s important to consider how you’ll get to the gym and back.

Taxis are one of the most common ways of getting around the major islands in the Northern Marianas. However, taking a taxi can be quite expensive, so it may not be the most cost-effective transportation option if you plan to go to the gym regularly.

You could also go to the gym by car, but keep in mind that you’ll probably be exhausted from your workout, too, which may make driving feel like an added chore.

Given all this, you ideally want to find a gym that’s within walking distance of your home. But if none match that criteria, try to find one that’s as close to you as possible. This is because fuel is more expensive in CNMI compared to most other places in the U.S, with a liter costing at least 50 percent more than it would in the mainland. Hence, you’ll want to minimize your fuel consumption as much as possible.

Travel Time

In addition to the cost of transportation, how far you have to travel (or how long the trip will take) can directly affect how motivated you’ll be to go to the gym.

In fact, a study found that people who traveled four miles or less to get to the gym often went at least five times a month. On the other hand, participants who had to travel five or more miles only went to the gym once a month on average. This means that you should choose a gym that’s no more than 15 minutes away by car.

First, think about how you’ll fit your workout into your schedule. For instance, would you prefer exercising at a gym that’s close to your home before you head off to work? Or would you rather sneak in a lunchtime cardio session at a gym that’s near your office?

Once you’ve decided on your ideal workout time, pull up an online map and plot all the gyms you can find within a five-mile radius. While you’re at it, make sure to check if they have ample parking space, as the lack of such is another common deterrent that keeps people from hitting the gym.

Gym Members and Staff

You may focus so much on a gym’s amenities and equipment that you forget to take a look at its members and staff, too. After all, you’ll be spending a lot of time in their company each time you go there. That’s why you should make sure that you’ll be surrounded by people who make you feel safe, comfortable, and welcome.

Additionally, you never know if your fellow gym members may just end up becoming some of your closest friends. They can act as your support system or accountability buddies, providing you the encouragement you need to stick to your fitness goals.

The same considerations apply to the gym’s employees, too, as their personalities and attitudes can shape the overall atmosphere of the gym. This goes for its personal trainers, instructors, nutritionists, maintenance personnel, and the front desk staff, to name a few. No matter what, these staff members should always treat you with respect and care.

Additionally, they should always have your best interests in mind. If you sense that a staff member is pressuring you into making uncomfortable decisions, it’s best to move on and find a better gym.

Keep these tips in mind as you search for the perfect gym in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Northern Islands. Make sure to consider each of the factors we’ve listed before making a final decision. That way, you’ll be sure to find a fitness center that best suits your needs.

And if you do decide on a gym, only to later find that it just isn’t working for you, there’s no shame in switching gyms down the line. What’s important is that you find an environment that’s conducive to reaching your health goals.
