The world might be on pause – but the kids most certainly are not. For parents everywhere, the COVID-19 pandemic has been a big challenge, not least because lockdown restricts the kids’ physical, social and even creative activities. But despite what the headlines might say, it really isn’t the end of the world!
All we need is a slightly fresh approach to things – some new ideas on how to cope with different circumstances. We might not be able to run off to the aquarium, but that’s OK because we can have just as much fun in our living rooms!
To prove it, we’ve put together a few fabulous ideas for you to do with the kids without leaving the comfort of your home. Take a look!

1. Go camping (yes, really)
Yes, we really mean pitch a tent and go camping. Get the torches out, grab the silly hats, and dig out the sleeping bags – an adventure awaits! The kids will really enjoy doing something they’ve never done before, and it will distract them from the fact they’ve been bored in lockdown. So pitch a tent in the living room! If you’re really lucky and you’ve got a garden and the weather is nice and dry, why not have an outdoor camping sleepover? It might even be good fun for the adults. You’ll thank us later…
Top tip: Check out these princess cushions with LED lights, perfect to light up the tent for story time.
2. Dedicate a wall to art!
There’s no better time to get creative than when we are confined to our homes! Get the kids to pick a theme, such as seasons or characters from a book, and dedicate a wall in your house entirely to the art they come up with. You can create an in-house exhibition of masterpieces and stick them to the wall (use Blu Tack for this so as not to damage any paintwork, and so you can remove them safely afterwards).
It will add positivity to any room you do this in, and it’s a really nice way of giving them some positive reinforcement, as they’re helping to decorate with their own masterpieces.
Top tip: You can pick up novelty stationery for as little as £1, such as these funky erasers, from Toys for a Pound.

3. Pick up a new musical instrument
It’s said that musical instruments can help with mindfulness in kids as well as in adults, and it’s not hard to see why! So while the schools are closed and we’re all stuck indoors, encourage them to pick up an instrument. It’s a fabulous way to keep them engaged, as well as encouraging them to explore their creative talents – and it doesn’t have to be an expensive project either! You don’t have to order huge drum sets of super expensive guitars – how about something smaller? Perhaps a tambourine or triangle to help them practice rhythm, or to generally blow off some steam by making a racket. If you’re happy to let the neighbours know how much fun you’re having, this might be the way to do it.
Top tip: Pick up a recorder for £1 and get musical without breaking the bank.
