Struggling to Teach Maths? Our Tuition Works Review

Bamboozled by Maths? Tuition WOrks comes to the rescue with a Free online individual Maths Lesson for your child.

Never did I expect to find myself home educating my kids and juggling my own working commitments but like most parents up and down the country that has become my new normal. I have gone for a structured approach with our home learning and it is working well for us. However there are some parts of the curriculum I just don’t feel confident teaching and as such I am happy to look at what online support is available and that has included using online specialists like Tuitionworks, who currently offer a FREE online 40 minute taster lesson in Maths.

Maths is a whole different language to me and despite my best intentions, I am not confident teaching new maths concepts to my YR5 daughter, Erin. She is a bright kid who enjoys learning but the teaching methods are different to how I was taught. Over the years I have used Maths tuition with both of the older two who wanted some Maths support before taking GCSE exams, they had face to face tuition with a qualified Maths teacher. I have also tutored students in both English and Sociology over the years as they are my teaching specialisms. Therefore, I am totally onboard with the benefits of having that one to one personalised learning experience a tutor can provide.

Since lockdown we are all using conferencing software like Zoom to communicate with family, friends and work colleagues and this has given us more confidence in using these platforms as a way of working. This has also led to an increase in parents using online providers to support their children’s learning.

Erin is currently preparing to take the 11+ next academic year and I have been worried that she will lose her confidence in Maths whilst she is not at school. Therefore when we were offered the opportunity for a FREE 40 minute Maths lesson with a qualified teacher from toota, I thought it would be an excellent opportunity for Erin to develop her Maths skills

What is Tuition Works?

Tuition Works is an online Maths tuition service available for students of all ages. They can help children reach their mathematical potential by providing one to one tuition with qualified teachers. Lessons are tailored to the individual and can boost confidence in addition to teaching and consolidating mathematical concepts.

Benefits of Tuition Works for online learning

  • Fully registered UK teachers
Students are connected to teachers who offer a great online tutoring experience. Each teacher will work at the students level, they can support students aiming for top tier grades. Or supporting borderline students to grades they didn’t think were achievable.
  • Seamless and Bespoke online experience
toota is built on a tailored online tuition platform. No need to download any software, just a seamless online tuition service built and designed for just that.
  • Revision library
Every session is recorded and accessible with its own dedicated account. With every lesson they have, students are building their own bespoke revision library, which they can access and playback at any time.
  • Whilst children are off school these online lessons provide subject specialists that will teach children using the most up to date teaching methods which children should be familiar with.
  • Online learning is convenient as lessons take place in your home and for parents they don’t need to be taking their children anywhere and waiting around for lessons to finish.
  • Once back in school tutoring is still a useful tool as it provides children with a one to one learning experience where they can go over topics they find challenging and or they can be pushed further academically. The lessons will go at the child’s pace ensuring each child leaves the session having learnt something.

Our experience

Erin chose a ‘keep on track’ session and I had said that Erin is an able child academically who sometimes lacks confidence. Erin asked to recap the topic perimeter and area. We booked the lesson for the following day and received an email confirmation of the lesson.

Just before the lesson was due to start we logged onto the system and launched the lesson. We had a little difficulty getting access which was resolved with the online chat function and we were then able to get going with her tutor.

Erin’s tutor was brilliant, he quickly got her chatting and he was ascertaining her ability through questioning. Erin and him then spent 40 minutes working through various Maths problems. We also learnt a great method of doing one style of question that we had been doing in a round about way. As he said Maths is not guess work it must follow the rules and we learnt a new rule which has made area easier!

We would use toota again to support her Maths understanding and learning as it did prove to me that I don’t have the technical capabilities to teach Maths – give me English anyday!

Currently, you can also receive a free maths assessment and introductory session with a tutor. Now is a great time to take up this offer whether your child is at primary school, or at secondary school. The free lesson will give you a taste of what to expect and at this time it is just too good to miss. There are no fee’s whatsoever, you don’t need to register any card or bank details, just use my link to get a free session and benefit from a qualified teacher taking over the days Maths learning!
