Taking your holiday with children, young or older, can sometimes feel more of a chore than a relaxing experience. Follow some of the following tips below to try and ensure that you are as prepared as possible and ready for the fun that will hopefully ensue on your next family holiday.
1. Be logical. Your children may not be as interested as you are in spending hours lying on the beach so try and pick a holiday destination that is going to be suitable for the whole family, all ages, and book a time of year that is going to work with the children’s school schedule as well as your schedule at work or home.
2. Plan your activities just don’t book too much. Children can be unpredictable at the best of times and until you know how your children are going to react with the change in weather or location it is probably best just to have provisional activity plans. You may arrive at your resort and find some other activities that your children are very interested in, if you have already booked a whole itinerary for the week then this could lead to disappointed children or a significantly reduced holiday budget as you try to cater to the needs of everybody while not cancelling the plans you already made. Remember that the local staff in your resort may know of some wonderful places to stay.
3. Write lists & stay organised. By planning ahead you will be able to schedule in require inoculations, pick up prescriptions for any medication, purchase items needed such as sun tan lotion or beauty products & just generally be as prepared as possible.
4. Do not be afraid to ask questions. By speaking to your travel agent before you head off for your family holiday you may be able to pick up some tips about the location that you are visiting as well as find out more about the local amenities and facilities. Also, when booking your holiday be sure to ask if there are any neighbouring areas that offer reduced rates for children as you may still be able to visit the location you wanted to travel to but save yourself some more money in the process.
5. Keep your children entertained. By packing your children’s favourite toys & games you will be able to ensure that they are kept occupied on their journey while feeling comfortable for having some of their own possessions with them. Be sure that you check airport restrictions before you travel just to be on the safe side.
6. Reduce your luggage. Nobody wants to have to take lots of luggage on holiday with them so think about whether your child still needs a pushchair and enquire with your travel agent whether you can hire a cot or sleeping equipment at your destination.
7. Check out the baby sitting services. You may find that your resort, or somewhere in the local area, offers babysitting services and this is a fantastic way for you to get out for the evening while feeling confident that your child is being well looked after.
8. Ensure your travel documents are up to date. Travelling without a passport or valid visa (in particular countries) is no longer allowed, ever, and could lead to your whole holiday being missed due to the time that it takes to get these documents. Each person travelling with require a passport, and visa if applicable, so be sure to visit the passport office website.
9. You know your child, remember that. Your child’s behaviour may be erratic at times, like most children really, and by planning accordingly in your timetable you should know roughly when they are going to want to sleep or eat. This can save you booking things that your child may miss and will also give you the confidence to book your holiday knowing what your child’s routine is.
10. Be prepared for every eventually. Pack a first aid kit in your luggage, although be aware of medication restrictions in certain countries, talk to your child about where they should meet you if they were to get separated from you & if possible considering purchasing a missing child bracelet complete with a mobile telephone number for you. Remember not to put your child’s name on this bracelet or any other personal information.
