If you are looking for a reliable Atom Learning trial and offer – look no further as we have you covered.
The secondary school your child attends has a huge impact on their educational outcomes. GCSE attainment at grammars is, on average, much better than in non-selective schools. Therefore it is no surprise that Grammar or selective schools are so competitive in the UK. As parents, we all want the best for our kids and this includes which secondary school they attend, did you know that only 5% of secondary school students attend grammar schools?
Competition is fierce but there are plenty of things that you can do to give your child the best chance of success and thankfully I have partnered with Atom Learning who have a special discount for my readers which offers big savings on their high-quality learning platforms.
If you have an academically able child you may be considering preparing your son or daughter for the 11+ and I am thrilled to share an Atom Learning offer that will not only provide you with a free trial but I have an exclusive 10% off promo codes too! Why Grammar Schools Matter
The former Chief Inspector of Schools, Chris Woodhead, claimed that “grammar schools have contributed more to social mobility than any other institution this country has known”.
Simply put, grammar schools offer children from all backgrounds the opportunity to attend high-achieving senior schools, which can open doors for future success.
There are several advantages to grammar schools although they have their critics too. The main advantage is that grammar school students get fantastic academic results. The second advantage of grammar schools is that many of the country’s celebrities, top business people and politicians have been the products of grammar school education, this suggests they teach more than just academic qualities and what is on the exam papers! Grammar schools also impact on those hidden curriculum qualities that include drive, resilience and confidence.
How to get into a Grammar school
Grammar schools are selective and students sit an entrance exam to gain a place. This often takes place at the start of year six and is taken in exam conditions in the prospective grammar schools. If there are a number of grammar schools within the local authority they may share the results across the schools so that students don’t need to sit multiple tests.
It is important to check when you need to register to take the 11+ test because there is usually a deadline in June time.
After the test you will receive the results from the schools and they will inform you as to whether your child has met the pass mark and they may tell you their ranking position.
Then when you complete the CAF (common application form) for applying to secondary schools you can choose to apply for any grammar schools you have met the entry requirements for. You will then be notified on national allocation day (which is March 1st typically) of the school that you have been allocated. You will then have about a week to accept or decline the place offered.
What is Atom Learning?
Atom Learning is a KS2 online adaptive learning platform, covering English, Maths, Verbal and Non-verbal reasoning and Science. It combines high-quality, teacher-made content with sophisticated technology to keep students on their individual, optimal learning paths. I have written a deep dive post that details the online lessons and all it offers. You can read that post here.
The monthly subscription provides a wealth of activities which provides a great chance for children to learn the skills needed when preparing for the 11 plus examination.
Atom Nucleus helps your child to thrive in school, master key subjects and excel in grammar and the independent school exams by preparing them for the common entrance examination.
Parents are also kept informed of their child’s progress in a parent portal. This helps you track the mock papers and also how your child is doing in their preparation for the exams. You even let them know which schools you are targeting and can see how they are doing compared to their peer group.
We used the Atom Prime subscription when Erin was preparing in year 5, each day she would use the online revision platform to work on areas that she struggled with. To pass the 11+ it is suggested that children need to be a year ahead of the national curriculum and therefore relying on them ‘just being bright’ or doing enough at school is often not enough. Therefore you will need to invest in some additional support and Atom offer this with their premium plan at an affordable price.
Erin had a weekly face-to-face group tutoring session and then used Atom at other times. We liked the unlimited mock tests as they are a great way to show where she needed to focus her attention and we could then focus on filling these gaps in knowledge which helped her gain confidence and ability.
Atom is hard which is what kids need, but it is also adaptable to them so it challenges them academically as they progress through the live lessons and meet their weekly targets. Atom Learning supplements their school work and adds a greater depth of knowledge to what they might be learning in the classroom. Many kids really enjoy doing extra work on laptops and via top technology, as it is a fun and engaging way to work rather than death by worksheets.
This is ideal for parents who want to support their children’s learning but don’t know how to prepare them for the 11 plus, and to be honest, why would parents know this stuff unless they are qualified teachers. The lessons are all put together by key stage experts and qualified teachers making it a viable alternative to face-to-face tutoring. It is also far more affordable than a 1:1 tutor who you might only see for an hour a week.
Another advantage is the flexibility that Atom offers as you can do the sessions as they suit you and therefore does not restrict you to set times each day or week, you literally have unlimited access. We really liked that in the school holidays we were able to do more.

This is great thanks, having just received our son’s end-of-Y4 school report we were really sad to read that he won’t achieve the expected standard for English as we have been working really hard with him at home. I am going to try to get him some lessons over the Summer to catch him up before September.
