Keeping your cat safe whenever he or she is out in the garden should definitely be one of your top priorities as a pet owner. Many owners don’t want their cats to wander beyond the safety of the garden, and if the same is true for you, here are some of the things you can do to keep them safe and against the threats that exist out there.
Install a Cat Flap
First of all, it makes sense to install some kind of cat flap so that your cat can get in and out of the outdoor space with ease. You want them to feel safe and able to move between the indoors and outdoors as and when they need to, and that includes when you’re not there or when you’re busy and focused on other things. A cat flap makes that possible.
Remove Potential Hazards
It’s also important to think about any potential hazards that might impact your cat when they’re out in the garden. There might be some structures that aren’t safe or something like that. Try to look at what could happen and if there’s anything at all you can do to remove those hazards from your space going forward. A few simple changes might make your outdoor space a lot safer.
Be Careful with Chemicals and Pest Products
If you sometimes use chemicals to remove pests like rodents or slugs in your vegetable patch, you should think again. Your cat can very easily consume those things and be seriously hurt or even killed in some instances. The same goes for any other chemicals and gardening products that might be left around in your outdoor space. It’s best to keep things items out of the way and under lock and key.
Install an Enclosure in Your Garden
Installing some kind of enclosure in your garden that keeps your cat in the garden is definitely a good idea. You don’t want them to head too close to any roads or other dangers that exist beyond the boundaries of your garden. You can buy an outdoor cat enclosure that includes fencing that they won’t be able to climb over. That’s the kind of thing you should be looking for.
Be Aware of Nearby Dangers
You should think about nearby dangers if you don’t have an enclosure for your cat. How can you make sure, for example, that your cat is not going to be impacted by the road or get too close to the busy roads near your house? That’s certainly something you should think about and ideally plan for as a responsible pet owner.
