Marathon training and giving up!

Ok so I hope you liked the dramatic headline.  But tonight I nearly did.  I cried!  Thankfully I walked home to a fab husband who gave me a reality check.

I want to do this so much for Erin and for Steps but I’m struggling.  I am not a runner, as Lee said earlier I haven’t actively exercised for about 20 years.  I am finding it really hard and I am worried that it is almost August and that is only one month away from me (along with Lee and Sam jogging 13 miles for charity).  In reality I should probably be aiming for 2014 not 2013.  But I am committed.  I struggle as I don’t know how to run.  That sounds so lame, but honestly I don’t.  I don’t know about pace, I definitely am running further before getting out of breath.  However that is not enough.  I need to keep going for 13 L-O-N-G miles.  I never did running at at school.  I was fit I loved Hockey but was never a runner and I don’t know how to do it.

My girl is inspirational, we are beating DDH but the days are still a struggle. The legacy remains and Erin is being referred to a specialist in Bristol now for her hypermobility syndrome, I want to do this in her honour but it is so bloody tough. My knee is throbbing and I lack strength. I don’t know when to eat, what to eat and how to do this.

It’s all feeling a bit crap. Tonight I have decided to run laps of the local park to build distance. Lee went out and worked out how many laps will equal what distance. Tomorrow is my turn to put it into practise. I wanted to do something that requires training and challenge but tonight I’m scared I’ve bitten off more than I am capable of.

Feeling a bit meh!  However if you want to give me a vote of confidence, dig deep click the link  JustGiving - Sponsor me now!

  1. Try following this training plan here.

As you are a few weeks in, perhaps don’t start at the beginning but it is possible. A plan will help you to focus on what you need to do. Your longest run beforehand should be about 2 weeks beforehand and doesn’t need to be full distance. It suggests 12 miles but 11 will do.

  2. So sorry to read this. You could always walk some of it, there’s no shame in that. Completing the distance is an achievement in itself. For food – eat at least two hours beforehand and stick to what agrees with you – carbs are best. Nothing too rich or spicy.
Good luck and keep going! You can do it, you’ve got a really brilliant reason to do it.
