This week I have been busy buying holiday essentials. When I say essentials I am of course referring to new TOM’s for Dylan and myself and lots of pretty summer clothes for the girls. Dyl has suddenly found fashion and whilst on one hand I am glad he has decided to embrace spending my money on clothes, as he usually just picks up what he dropped on the floor the night before, I wish he actually knew what he liked. He seems to be growing up really quickly at the moment both physically and emotionally. Whilst I have said that I find these tween years the hardest it is a privilege to see his character developing on his transition from boy to teen. In many ways we are watching him grow and it makes us think of how we are future proofing your child’s tomorrow
He seems to be modelling himself on his almost 18 year old uncle. Unfortunately that means jeans that sits on his hips flashing his boxers and wanting brands like Jack Wills and Hollister that don’t cater for a ten year old. He is stuck in terms of shops really. Childrens shops don’t seem to have what he wants. He found one pair of long shorts (or are they short longs) in Gap in a beige colour and that is it. He liked them so decided to stick with them and get a second pair in the exact same style and colour. When I bought home a very similar pair but in a check fabric they were scorned and I traipsed back to town for a refund. I have found some Ralph Lauren T Shirts in TK Maxx for him and those got passed the scorned face.
I wish it was easier to find boys fashion. Girls are so easy to adorn with everything from dresses to shorts. The boys range is much more limited and I think they get a raw deal. That is probably why his wallet is always brimming with cash left over from birthdays and visits to granddad. Chloe on the otherhand is always spending her allowance – Topshop is her best friend.
Maybe this is why Dylan felt inclined to spend £65 on gems recently for his ipod games. Yes £65 the little blighter! To be fair he was not aware how much he had spent and now the iPod has the appropriate security settings but I’m still smarting from the experience. I made Dylan pay me back the £50 he had overspent and he begrudgingly took it from his wallet. He pulled a few faces but knew better than to argue with me. What he doesn’t realise is that I have popped the money back into his cash ISA with Santander as we were refunded the money he inadvertently squandered.
This weekend will see us trying again and I think I will try Gap again first and see if they have the same shorts in any more colours for him! That way at least I know he will wear them. I would love to know where you shop for tween boys. In addition to taking an interest in clothes his hair has suddenly taken on a life of its own. It now requires hair wax and he needs to get up a full ten minutes earlier just to sweep his hair across at the front!
