10 Ways to Make Your Home Feel More Relaxing

Your home is your castle, even if you live in a tiny studio apartment. Our homes have become the place where we study, work out, meditate, cook, and in some cases, the place where we work.

When you spend so much time in one place, it can easily turn into a stressful environment full of clutter and chaos. Instead of a comforting escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, you find yourself unable to focus.

But don’t worry. There are tons of simple ways to make your home a more harmonious and relaxing environment where you’ll actually feel at peace. For me having a beautiful home calms me and puts me at ease, we can all create a beautiful place with some simple tips including adding wall art.

Add Some Plants

Buy some plants. Lots of them! We often underestimate how much we miss being outdoors, so bring the outside in is to decorate your house with plants and flowers. Place them in areas where you really want to relax in like your living room, personal workspace, or even the bedroom.

Research has shown that plants help lower stress levels. Plus, they’re beautiful to look at and they really do go with any style of décor! But plants also have the power to filter out indoor toxins. Essentially, they make the air in your home cleaner. But if you’re not much of a green thumb, then we recommend plants that don’t require a lot of attention like parlor palms.

New Art on the Walls

An immediate and easy way to add beauty to your home is with wall art. This doesn’t have to be expensive either. You can change the wall art to fit in with a new colour scheme or when you just want a refresh.

You can find affordable museum-quality wall art delivered right to your doorstep with a money-back guarantee.  Fine Art America is the largest art site in the world with millions of paintings, photographs, and illustrations for sale from hundreds of thousands of living artists and iconic brands. There will be something for everyone.

I also like that you can search and buy a collection as this helps build a cohesive look if the design and putting together a room is not your strong point. I often do this now as I know that everything will match! These days if I DIY a room I often buy a whole range from the same store! I do the same with outfits and if I see something on a mannequin or put together as a look online I buy the whole thing!

Surround Yourself With Happy Memories

Framing photos of your friends and family and beautiful memories, (like your a recent holiday) are a good way to remind yourself that life is precious and you’re surrounded by love. So, get a few stylish frames and add a couple of photos of your loved ones or of places you’ve enjoyed being in. These will trigger happy memories and instantly boost your energy. Make sure you place these photo frames somewhere where you’re bound to notice them.

Warm Up Your Place With Candles

We often associate candles with relaxation. So, when your eyes see the low light coming from a candle, your brain immediately sends signals to your body telling it to relax. To help reduce physical and emotional tension, light a couple of scented candles in your living room, at-home workspace, or the kitchen. Just don’t leave the candles unattended, and don’t forget to blow them out before you go to sleep at night. You can even create the habit of lighting a few candles when you’ve finished your work and take 5 minutes to do a few mindfulness exercises.

Create a Personal Safe Space

Find an area in your bedroom or living room where you feel the most at peace then turn it into your own personal safe space. Buy a shelf and fill it with your favorite books, magazines, or collectibles. Add whatever will make you happy. It could be your grandma’s old trinkets, baby photos, or a lovely lamp you bought on a trip.

Get yourself a side table where you can put your favourite snacks or drinks on. And don’t forget to buy yourself a nice, fluffy pillow or a warm blanket to keep you warm during those cold winter nights. This cosy safe space will help you relax and get some much needed alone time away from the world.

Adjust Your Shelves

Take everything off your shelves and clean each shelf. Once you’ve dusted off all of the various items, too, put everything back but in a different order. It might not seem like much, but this will refresh your décor and also the way you look at the room.

Unleash Your Favourite Aroma

We all have a favourite scent that calms our body and mind like cinnamon, pumpkin spice, citrus, Frankincense, or lavender. You can buy a couple of incense sticks and light them up in different areas of your home or you can buy an essential oil diffuser to release your favorite aroma into the air. Some scents even come in air spray, but regardless of what you use, your home will be so much more relaxing with this simple aromatherapy technique.

Get Rid of Clutter

A messy home is a physical representation of the clutter in your mind. By getting rid of the clutter, you’ll feel less chaotic. Start by looking around for items you no longer need and either donate them or toss them in the trash. The same goes for items that have been piling up like old newspapers and magazines. Recycle them. Also, take a moment to look through your pantry and fridge. See anything that expired months ago? Throw it out. Remember that a clutter-free home equals a calmer you.

Add Some Colour to Your Décor

A new colour on your wall can do wonders for your mood, but choosing the right colour can stir different emotions. So, make sure you make the right choice. For example, blue has a calming effect and can make you feel more serene. On the other hand, yellow will increase your energy and brighten your mood. You can also use white or an off-white shade to make your home feel more spacious. It’s simply a matter of figuring out what colour you’re more drawn to, how it’ll make you feel, and where you want it. Experiment with texture on the wall to and look at hanging a tapestry it adds depth and interest to your home.

Soften Up Harsh Lighting

Is the lighting in your home so harsh that it feels like you’re using a lighthouse lamp? Well if that’s the case than the lighting you’re using is way too strong to relax. So, consider buying yourself a couple of table lamps or floor lamps, preferably one that has settings that lets you adjust the light intensity. This will help you to relax more. Also, during the day, consider using less overhead lights and opening up the curtains or shades to let some natural sunlight into your home.

Look for Other Accessories at Home

You don’t need to drive all the way to the store to buy accessories to redecorate your house. Sometimes, the solution to your problem is right under your ceiling. So, instead of shopping for new wall art, a vase or other type of decorative piece, try looking around your home for items to switch around. For example, you might have a lamp in your night table that would look better on the side table next to the couch. Switch them up. Maybe that framed photo of the Eiffel Tower would look nicer in your bedroom. Move it. The act of moving things around will leave you feeling so refreshed and relaxed, you’ll feel like you’ve moved into an all-day spa.
