3 Signs Your Child Might Have Autism Spectrum Disorder

When it comes to children, especially if you’re a new parent who’s never raised a child before, it can be hard to decipher between just the normal, everyday behaviors of a toddler and the signs of a disorder such as autism.

You’re certainly no expert, and so you might not become aware that anything’s wrong until you start to notice some of the more major signs of something serious like autism.

But even that might be going too far with it. What if you don’t know a single thing about autism and wouldn’t recognize the mental disorder if it hit you in the face?

Well, while everyone can be ignorant of something at any given point, it might pay dividends to understand what autism looks like in case you do start to notice its symptoms in your child.

So, here they are to help you out: three signs your child might have autism spectrum disorder.

Communication Problems

Every child is different, and that is for sure, but there are certain communication issues you might notice in your child that could signal the presence of autism.

Your child might not look at you in the eyes when talking to you, or might show you a facial expression that does not go with the overall mood of the child. The child might also not notice the goings-on around him or her, such as when people come and go or if you try to call your child.

Remember, we can all get distracted by things from time to time, especially children, but if you notice this becoming a pattern, you may at least want to look into something like autism services for your children to see if anything is going on.

Socialization Problems

Another category of problems you may notice in your child is issues with socializing. As they go through school, children benefit from making friends and being able to talk with others.

Children with autism, however, often struggle with this aspect of growing up. They might have no idea how to make friends, how to play with other kids, or how to share their toys. The child might not even be able to understand that other people have feelings just like they do.

Empathy, as we know, is a vital quality to develop as we get older, but if a child seems absolutely unable to understand others’ positions in things, it could be a sign of autism spectrum disorder.

Routine Problems

Finally, many children with autism find it difficult to deviate from established routines in doing things. The activities in the routine may be the most mundane things, such as watching TV at this hour or going home from a grandparent’s house at that hour.

While the slightest change in that schedule does not seem like an issue to an adult, to a child with autism, it can be a huge obstacle. The child might throw tantrums if the schedule is not followed to the letter.

This is obviously a problem that can get worse as the child gets older. If the root issue turns out to be autism, then there are certain treatments, such as ABA therapy, that can help to improve the child’s behavior.

These are some of the many signs of autism. If you notice them in your child, you owe it to yourself at least to talk to a doctor about your options.
