There are both advantages and disadvantages to having parents that are teachers. You cannot get away with much as the parents tend to know what is going on in all schools all of the time. My children love and loathe us being teachers in quite equal measures for these very reasons.
1. Homework can never be rushed or forgotten as parents will not believe the ‘I don’t have any’ line.
2. However parents are on hand to help with said homework and actually understand what they should be doing – who uses number lines rather than columns for addition and subtraction?
3. Parents are walking stationery cupboards, need A3 paper ask dad, need some poly pockets ask mum, there are always glue sticks in the drawer.
4. Parents evening are excruciating for the child whilst parents chat to the teachers about exam boards and current educational policy and curriculum changes. Why can’t they just sit smile and pretend they care?
5. Your parents call your teachers by their first name because they know them from a previous school position or training courses. Your friends think that’s quite funny and a little cool.
6. You also know the teachers first names because they have been to your house for drinks and you accidentally use their first name whilst talking to them at school. You friends laugh even harder now that you are mortified and glowing red.
7. Everyone assumes you will also be a teacher when you grow up!
8. They are always marking – always and often refuse to help you with your homework because they are marking someone else’s. What the actual?
9. When you go out into town other teenagers say hi to your mum and dad, which is weird. Especially when you are on holiday, on a beach and they appear in front of you.
10. Your parents offer to help out being a mentor for your year group or coming in on mock interview day. This is not a good thing when you are at secondary school. Helping with reading in KS1 is acceptable but not at secondary level.
11. When you were younger you spent some days in school, getting mums classroom ready for the new term! Boring
12. Having six weeks off with parents in the summer is good and saves you from being at the grandparents all the time.
However I think they should just be grateful that we don’t actually teach at the same school they are pupils of. Imagine that pain!

Brilliant! I went to school with a couple of kids who’s parents were teachers at the same school, I imagine that would have been a complete nightmare! My sister is a teacher, but her little on is still very little, so time yet for her to know what it’s like having a parent who is a teacher!
I always wondered what it would be like to be at a school which your own parents taught in. We had a girl in our year at school whose mum was a teacher but it clearly didn’t affect her too badly as she was later voted by all of us to be headgirl!
Ha ha! I bet that is odd having parents who are teachers. At least they could help you with your exams.
This made me laugh – I think it’s a massive advantage as far as homework as I can really struggle to help Bethan with some of hers lately x x
Haha I can imagine having teachers for parents does make life a little different.
This is funny! The Head of my daughter’s school has her twins as pupils there. Maybe it helps that there are two of them!
He he made me smile, I sometimes think I make the worst parent as an ex teacher, I think it can go to either extreme!
I went to a tiny school with everyone knowing each other and a lot of my friends’ parents were actually teacher, so we sometimes got to see a little more than we should have when we went round their houses…
What do polypockets have to do with homework? This is very funny, I was always envious of my two best friends who had teachers for parents.

This is all so true! It applies to other school jobs too, I’m a School Governor and I think if my son was much older he would be so embarrassed!
I always thought it would be rather cool to have parents as a teacher. I volunteer at the school and still can’t get used to being called Mrs!! lol
This made me chuckle – especially the hoard of glues ticks, poly pockets and so on. Plus teachers are always bargain buying pens, treats & stickers in bulk – usually for around 30 pupils!
I currently work at my kids school and they love it and hate it in equal measure… Hate it for the homework reasons and the fact that I am friends with their teachers, and love it when they have a problem and come and find me! 😀

It must be so useful to know what is really going on…and I find it hard enough to do the homework etc I can definitely see the advantages!
Number 2 especially made me smile – I have NO IDEA WHAT I AM DOING with maths these days – they changed it since I was at school and when I try to help I get told I am doing it wrong….
