Most people will agree that when you move home it can be one of the most stressful things in life.
Yes, there’s usually lots to organise, and sadly too often, not enough time to do it. Especially when you’re rushed, things tend to go wrong.
For instance, the dreaded buying chain collapses at the last minute, the removal van comes on the wrong day or the cat disappears as you’re about to drive off.
Moving house is not for the faint-hearted.
But, the good news is there are few simple yet effective strategies to help you move home and make it less stressful.

5 Tips to Make Your Move Home Stress Free
Agree on a Budget
Before you do anything, sit down and carefully cost out your expected expenditure and agree to a budget. Things to include in your calculation are:
- Cost of packing boxes
- Storage fees
- Removal van hire
- Professional Cleaning costs
- Temporary accommodation/hotel costs if the property you are moving into is not ready when you have to move out
Make sure you have enough to cover the cost of your household bills and living costs throughout the process. Set aside an emergency pot in case anything gets broken or damaged during the move e.g. white goods.
Create a plan
Stress is packing whilst the removal van parks in your driveway. If you want to avoid last-minute blood pressure spikes when you move home, put a plan together beforehand to help you keep on track.
Map out key dates and milestones for each stage of the move. And, remember to give yourself extra time, because packing always takes longer than you think.
To stay focused, decide beforehand which areas you are going to pack-up first, and in what order. For instance, start by packing non-essentials, and then as the moving day draws closer, pack more frequently used items.
Always, order more packing boxes, tape, and labels than you think you might need. And, don’t forget to buy sturdy boxes as after all, these will be carrying your treasured possessions. Many removal companies will provide these for you before you move home. You could also consider getting the removal company to pack you up as they are fast and efficient generally.
Declutter
Moving house is the best time to get rid of unwanted items. But, the longer you’ve lived somewhere, the more clutter you’ve probably accumulated (and if you have kids there’s even more).
But, don’t feel daunted by the idea of decluttering. It doesn’t have to be painful but rather quite cathartic and freeing. And, a great thing to do before you start a fresh chapter.
If you need some decluttering inspiration, here are a few ideas:
- The 10-minute sweep — this is a great way to get rid of superficial clutter. Take a bag, set the timer and go around your home chucking out empty shower gel bottles, old magazines and newspapers, old clothes, and shoes.
- The 12 Month Rule — take each item and ask yourself ‘Have I looked at this or used at least once in the last 12-months?’ If the (honest) answer is no, chuck it.
It could be worthwhile to investigate Now Storage self storage in Reading if you want to keep some things to see if you will need them in the future, there are a number of reasons families can benefit with personal storage such as needing to store items during a move or home renovations, contents from house clearances, belongings while you travel, emigrate or attend University, or to simply make more space in your home.
Make time for yourself
When you move home it is hard work and can be very tiring. Don’t over-stretch yourself and end up exhausted and unable to do anything. Throughout the packing period make sure to take regular breaks. Take a walk outside, eat healthy food, meet a friend for a coffee, read a book or listen to music.
By allowing yourself some time to relax, you will feel far more refreshed and better able to deal with any hiccups you encounter.
Get help with Moving Home
Don’t do it alone. If you have friends or family close by, don’t hesitate to call in a few favours. Even if it’s just to pop to the shops for you or to entertain the kids for an hour as you clear up and move home. Any little bit helps and you can return the favour for them when the time comes.
