As I was bathing Erin tonight it has finally started dawning on me how much life is about to change. After Sunday night Erin won’t get the chance for a bath for at least 18 weeks possibly longer. I have an occupational therapist coming to the house on Thursday to carry out a house assessment. On the phone she was talking about hoists, stair lifts, moving her bedroom downstairs and such like. Apparently the cast will weigh almost the same as her current weight.
Alongside the big stuff there are the numerous little things, things I am probably totally unaware of yet.
Thankfully Hippychick have come to the rescue with some great products that are sure to make my life easier. Hippychick sent me the multi award winning totseat which converts all dining chairs into a highchair and a safe place to sit toddlers. Erin won’t fit into traditional highchairs but I want to be able to still encourage her independence at meal times. Sitting with her brother and sister at the dining table is an important part of our day. Now I am hopeful this will continue. Totseat is available in a number of colurs and patterns, it is also ideal for busy mums on the go, and can be used when restaurants have run out of highchairs, I will be carrying this about in our change bag.
The second product is the back saving Hipseat this ingenious product has been developed to help adults carry children naturally on their hip. It is suitable for babies from six months old and is Specifically designed to address one of the root causes of adult back pain, the seat provides a firm shelf for the child to sit on and supports their increasingly heavy weight from underneath. Instead of twisting the spine, the back stays straight and the child is tucked into the chest on whichever side is more comfortable for the wearer, providing comfort and security for both adult and child. This is going to so useful as although I guess I won’t be carrying Erin when we are out about I will be carrying her in the home. The seat will take the weight of the cast and obviously Erin will not be able to use her legs to hang onto to me like a limpet! Therefore this will help carry her.
Both of these products are recommended by Steps the small charity that helps children and their families with lower limb conditions including club foot and hip dysplasia. I will take photo’s of Erin using both of these products over the next couple of weeks and let you know how we get on.

I can’t rate the totseat highly enough. I use ours about 3 or 4 times a week and Bud loves sitting at the table like a ‘big boy’. Glad you are able to find solutions to dealing with your daughter’s spica. 🙂
