Parenthood is filled with so many told (and untold) joys, from watching them sleep to helping them learn and everything in between. Being a parent is so many things; it is exciting, terrifying, tiring, and rewarding – but it is anything but straightforward. The responsibility of being a parent is all-encompassing and no one wants to fail their kids, least of all the brand-new parents. The rest of us have learnt that we cannot be perfect parents because there is no such thing, all we can do is raise them well and hope for the best. Luckily for all of us, there are plenty of tips and tricks available on the corkboard to help you on your path to raising a caring child – like these 5 right here:

Encourage Empathy
The ability to understand another person’s feelings is not developed overnight. You need to understand that as your child gets older, their understanding of emotions and feelings will grow too. Your 2-yr old may not understand how they have upset someone, but you need to ask them how they would feel in certain situations and help to encourage them to always think of others. Empathy does not just apply to humans; you should help your children to develop empathy towards all creatures.
Positive Action
Children are so much smarter than we give them credit for. Never underestimate your child’s ability to understand and read a situation, you would be surprised at how capable they are – especially from age 5 and up. Positive parenting can go a long way in helping your child become a kind and caring little person. Your children will almost always try to live up to your expectations, so you need to always expect the best from them.
Show Respect
Never assume that just because your child is young that they do not deserve or need to feel respected. Your child is going to drive you nuts for most of their young life but that does not mean that they do not need to be respected. Be mindful and respectful of your child’s feelings, thoughts, and opinions – that does not mean that they will be right but there is always a respectful way to deal with any situation. Children who grow up feeling respected will grow into respectful adults, it is a win-win.
Always Be Patient
As with all things parent-related, you need to stay calm and patient as much as you can. Keep in mind that you had the time to learn and make mistakes when you were younger, just like they will now. There are going to be moments where staying calm might seem impossible but for the sake of raising a caring child, you need to just take a few deep breaths and push through it.
Teachable Moments
You are bound to run into adults behaving badly when you are out with your kids, instead of covering their ears and running away you should use these as teachable moments for them. If you see someone being rude to someone else in public then pull your child aside and point out why that type of behaviour is wrong. This will help to teach your child that rudeness is not acceptable.
Sharing is caring!
