Camping is one of the best ways for a family to bond with each other. You are able to get far away from a lot of the distractions and responsibilities that tend to keep us from spending quality time together. Being in nature is also a wonderful way to spend a vacation.
There are a lot of things to do when you are out on a camping trip. However, sometimes it can be difficult to think of what to do next once you have started really relaxing and you want to start doing something different. There are a lot of surprising ways to keep yourself entertained when camping. In this article, we will go over several good ideas to make sure that you don’t get bored while camping.

1 – Play some harmless pranks
Although there is plenty for kids to do when camping, they, unfortunately, can fall into a bit of a rut at some point. They stop responding to calls to play cards or charades or things like that and need to be shaken out of their ennui. This is when it’s time to bring out some harmless pranks to shake things up a bit.
A good one that nobody expects is to play the bean boozled game. This involves getting some Jelly Belly jelly beans that have many different flavors. Once in a while, you’ll get one that tastes like something revolting. This is certain to get a few laughs when somebody ends up eating the candy that tastes like stinky socks.
The idea is that the pranks shouldn’t be so harsh that it has the possibility of injuring or otherwise ruining the good time vibe of the camping trip.
2 – Learn new skills
There is a lot of downtime when you go camping. Since you have no responsibilities or an alarm to be tied down to, you end up needing to find some ways to pass the quiet hours. A great way to spend this time is by taking advantage of the quiet and using it to learn a new skill.
It is important to learn new things all the time so look for some interests that you have that you’ve been putting off. You could learn to play the guitar for example. In fact, no camping trip is complete without a sing-along with a guitar and campfire.
Taking up some kind of art or craft is also a great way to spend time. You could look into learning how to make a pine needle basket, for instance. If you’ve always wanted to paint then this is as good a time as any to get started.
3 – Cook some gourmet camping food
There’s nothing wrong with burgers and hotdogs cooked over a campfire when you’re at the pitch. However, take this opportunity to really up your culinary game when it comes to cooking over a fire.
This is a primal way to cook that can really be a lot of fun since it is much different than cooking at home. It is more of a challenge to cook something gourmet over a fire. Take some time to think of recipes that you think would be good cooked with fire and then do your shopping ahead of time.
Having some restaurant quality food while on your camping trip will make the experience one of a kind. Your only limit to some of the meals is your imagination. You can go as rustic or gourmet as you like as long as you are trying to use some creativity to your cooking.
4 – Do some collecting
There are so many items in the natural world that can keep you interested for a long time even after your camping trip. Collectors can have a field day when they are out in nature.
Think of things that you love to see while camping and then start a collection. For instance, you can collect wildflowers to put in a book and press them as they will last for years this way. The same goes for colored rocks or even interesting-looking shells if you’re camping near a beach.
You can even do some collecting by taking pictures. Pick a theme or topic and then collect as many of the examples as you can with a camera. Birdwatching is a great example. Arm yourself with a field guide and see how many of the local birds you can get pictures of for your collection.
