Buying a bra: the basics every woman should know

Buying bras and other types of undergarments is a normal part of life. However, to get the best possible fit and the most out of your budget you may want to brush up on your lingerie knowledge.

This could help you to become a more sustainable buyer, and even be able to find items that are better suited to your lifestyle. There are certain types of criteria you may want to think about before making that purchase that can help you to look and feel better, and even make some more ethical choices regarding your consumerism.

Soothe your ego

While bras can have a practical purpose in supporting your breasts, some women may begrudge wearing them. However, just because they have a practical role doesn’t mean they can’t be attractive too.

Considering some of the more upmarket celebrity brands, such as bras by SKIMS, which was created by Kim Kardashian, can allow you to feel like a bit of a star yourself when you wear them. You may find that you feel happier about putting them on in the morning, and even more motivated to look after your garments, if you genuinely like them. Ultimately, no matter what style of bra you need, the one you choose should always make you feel comfortable, confident, and fully supported!

Check the fit

While style is important, as discussed above, you may also want to consider the fit. Realistically, there is no point in buying a pretty bra if it isn’t available in the correct size. Taking some time, before you go to the store or place an order, to educate yourself on proper fittings can be beneficial, saving you both time and money. Measuring around your under-bust and the widest part of your breasts can be useful, especially if you won’t have the opportunity to try them on first. When you do pick, or receive, different bras, you should be able to fasten them on the loosest setting, as bras can stretch over time and when you do your laundry, and properly hold your breasts.

Avoid fast fashion

While you may want to save money, buying some of the cheaper items on the market may not always be beneficial. This can result in you needing to replace them a lot sooner, something that is becoming commonly known as fast fashion. In the long run, this can be bad for your bank balance, especially when some of the better-quality items could last you for years, as opposed to only a few wears.

Alongside this, fast fashion is also incredibly bad for the environment, as a lot of these garments end up in landfill sites. You may also find that these items are of poorer quality or materials, which may be especially bad for those with sensitive skin or larger busts.

There usually comes a time in a woman’s life when she needs to replace her bras. Before you begin shopping, you may want to think about the aspects that are important to you. This can help you to make better, more conscientious, shopping choices.
