A busy day at school, I pick up Erin from nursery, collect Dylan and friend from the childminders. A quick snacky tea for the boys before taking them to cubs. Dump Erin in the bath and the door swings open……mum, mum MUM.
My foot hurts, plus I can’t stand on it.
Considering Chloe had physio the following morning I looked at her foot, made her soak it in the bath, before deciding what to do. She struggled, she limped, she moaned a bit. I thought physio’s won’t touch her if she is swollen and complaining of pain so thought I’d take her to get it checked as the ankle has been slow to heal since she broke it. We arrived at the hospital and I explained that she is recovering from a broken ankle. We went through to the childrens area and were soon triaged by the nurse who was not sure why she was in pain, why the foot was swollen and asked a number of questions about Chloe’s day. After a further hour we were seen by a wonderful doctor who asked the same questions and felt Chloe’s ankle and foot.
The doctor said she was puzzled, she was looking for the link between Chloe’s pain and explanations and the ankle. Suddenly she had a light-bulb moment and said – it is not the ankle I think its the foot! She ordered x rays of both Chloe’s ankle and foot. Again we waited.
We were called in and the doctor’s face told a tale. ‘Good news or bad news’ she enquired? ‘Go on’ I replied
The ankle has healed beautifully. However the foot is broken. The fifth metatarsal to be precise, it is the footballers injury.
As realisation dawned on me, a quick look at my beautiful 13 yr olds face told me she hadn’t realised the implications. She was ready to go back to dancing this week, she was going to be in a cheer-leading competition on Friday yet instead she is back in plaster. When I mentioned plaster the implication was understood. My gorgeous girl who has had enough of not playing sport, not spending her Saturday dancing and not being a part of all the school teams sobbed. That is hard for a mum and the wonderful doctor was also sad for Chloe. She tried to console her, said that she had just been very unlucky. Explained that on Friday at fracture clinic she may be taken out of plaster and get the boot instead. But the outcome is the same. It will be another six weeks of not participating.
As we went into the plaster room, the final insult was that the plaster nurse suggested that Chloe’s joggers would need to be cut off. They are the fitted style, gently tapered in at the ankle. My girl stopped, turned her face and said ‘No way, you are not cutting these, they are Jack Wills’!! I giggled at my girl. No matter what she was going through she remembered she has style and her love for Jack Wills beats all the pain!
I wonder what I did wrong that my two girls are always visiting the hospital. I worry that the plaster technicians know me by name. I wait in anticipation for the phone call from social services! Especially as Chloe has no idea whatsoever how this break even happened.
Sharing is caring!
