Apprehensive before spica removal.

Four months or 18 weeks or 120 days ago Erin became weighted down. Life paused for us whilst the sun slept, and spring has now sprung ready for Erin to blossom again. It is the eve before spica removal and I am churning inside.  My beautiful little girl has taught us so many things. She has taught us to keep smiling even when you are up against it. She taught us that nothing will limit her ability to follow her brother and sister around the house and most of all she has continued to teach me what unconditional love is.

Today has been full of mixed emotions. I joined a facebook group a while back for parents of children with DDH. It has been an amazing support. There are parents supporting each other at each and every stage of DDH, it really highlights the best bits of the world wide web. I have learnt so much from those posts. This morning I read one mummy proudly announcing her child had just walked unaided for the first time in 6 months. Big fat tears fell and I mean proper tears. I will never again take a child learning to walk for granted.

I stood in church this morning to share where Erin is at, and that tomorrow is removal day. Again I choked on my words.

I am apprehensive, I don’t know what the future holds for Erin’s hip. I don’t know when she will take those tentative first steps, but i know it’ll be me in pieces. Wearing shoes will be a novelty, she still hasn’t had her first proper pair of walking shoes. She was only in cruisers pre cast.

I had some great tips shared today, to cut Erin’s nails short incase she scrathes at her legs.  I have been told she may feel cold after wearing fibre glass trousers for so long so will be taking her a blanket.  It’ll be eight weeks until the next appointment which will decide her next operation.  Eight weeks to be a normal little girl again.

  1. Emma, now you brought big tears to my eyes reading your post…I love that we share our ups, downs, good days and bad days with everyone in that group…

We both have little girls, with big spirits that not even a cast can break!  Erin and Lauren have shown us that it’s not what happens in life, it’s how you deal with it – and both of them have surpassed any expecations either of us may have had!  From one DDH Mom to another, BIG Hugs!  Our little girls are going to be just fine, we on the other hand, well….That’s another story! 🙂  Best of luck tomorrow, can’t wait to hear how happy Erin is to see her legs again!
