The past few days I have had no desire to blog – I have felt lost and didn’t feel that I wanted to add to the noise on social media yet things have shifted again for me. Life is changing, life is different but we need to find a new normal for now.
I pulled Erin from school a few days ago but Dylan has still been attending. Chloe came home from University in the week too and is settling back into home life.
The headline news of no exams for GCSE students is especially impactful to us as Dylan was due to be taking his. We are now waiting for the announcement tomorrow on how grades will be allocated. It is looking like teacher assessments will lead the way somehow. Dylan didn’t work for his mocks but has really stepped up his revision in recent weeks. I feel really sad that he won’t get the opportunity to show his potential now. We know from experience that the ‘real exams’ are so different and Chloe got a couple of grades higher than she was predicted in almost every single subject. Dylan doesn’t get that opportunity. I don’t know how these students are supposed to have any sense of pride in their results.
Working from home and juggling keeping our children entertained is going to be challenging but it gives us an opportunity to reset our children, all academic pressure has been lifted off, the competition between parents and schools is reduced this will be a good thing for young people and hopefully we will learn from this. Corona Virus is giving us the opportunity to live slowly for a period of time, Rather than rush rush we have time to step back and regroup. After all this we will have a new respect and take a lot less for granted.
This gives us the chance to bring back crafting, to learn lifeskills, to learn to cook again and show how resilient we can be.
