When looking at the potential of new homes I have always thought about what needs changing. I know you need to look past the decor and I can do that. It was the same four years ago when we looked at what was to become our home. Lee was the one who was keenest on this house, we had already seen a slightly larger house which I really saw potential in, but the positioning was not as desirable and it definitely needed lots doing to it. We were the first to view this house that was to become home and Lee was convinced this was our perfect home right away.
As we walked and talked we said the ensuite needed doing and the carpet in the dining room and study was going to be high on the ‘rip it out’ list. Yet it has taken over three and half years! When we settle in I think your eyes stop seeing the things you don’t really like. Your eyes get used to the colours and it doesn’t stand out to you in quite the same ways. That is what happened to us, plus we had a toddler learning to self feed who turned into a child in spica that spent inordinate amounts of time painting and making cakes at the dining table. The carpet slid down the list of priorities until last month. Last month I decided it was time to sort and declutter the dining room. That meant getting rid of two old units. We decided to get a new dining table and I eagarly started browsing. I wasn’t planning on spending more than a couple of hundred. Except I soon realised that I wanted something special. I had decided on a a table and matching dresser. I wanted a dresser that would showcase a few photos and books. It also needed some storage. I spent time trawling the internet then I went looking in the shops.
When I went to Oak Furnitureland I found just what I was looking for in the French Farmhouse range. I ordered when home as I just wanted to take my time on choosing the range and not rush into it. This is the beauty of having physical shops and the internet – they complement each other brilliantly! I knew I needed it in my life and so I upped my budget to be able to buy real wood, real quality furniture that was made to last. Once I had settled on the range I had to choose chairs as you can have different designs and seat colours. It was totally the right decision and then I headed off to the carpet shop too – if I was buying quality the rest of the room needed to match! Then I just sat back and waited for a call to arrange delivery.
The delivery of furniture was smooth and on time. The delivery man explained that each item is checked prior to delivery and I again needed to recheck and ensure I was happy within 24 hours. Unpacking the boxes was straightforward and each item was rechecked and I was pleased. I then had wait for Lee to get home to help me arrange the furniture – did I say I’m not good at being patient! Therfore I got Dyl to help me with the base unit which looked amazing like I thought it would. Even the drawers are solid wood and the whole thing just was so well made.
The dining room now looks clutter free, modern and the chairs are great with their high backs and wipe down leather. Ideal for a family. However my favourite part was shopping and dressing the dresser, I found some great bargains at Homesense.
The dressed up dresser really adds all the finishing touches to our home.
It just goes to show that a few key peices can totally transform the look and feel of a room. It now feels like a proper dining room rather than a place to eat and dump things. I just need to invite some friends for dinner now so that I can show it off!

wow, looks lovely, we have the same red carpet and i hated it since we moved in to this property, but we are renting so will have to wait a bit longer till we actually can redecorate

I need new flooring in my entry room as well as a few other places in the house.
What a transformation! It’s easy how revamping rooms can be pushed back and back – we stripped the walls in our bedroom (of our old house) about 2 years before we actually decorated -_- I was not a happy bunny!!!

What a transformation! Looks lovely – and I *so* know what you mean about offending items/rooms not really being on the radar once you have moved in and it is “home”. We lived with an horrendous wall to ceiling tiled family bathroom for 3 years in Cambridge, the tiles were Laura Ashley blue shells – it might have looked quite nice as a feature strip/wall, but ALL the tiles were shell ones! Made the eyes boggle for a while…
see this is what i miss, we are trying to move to bigger place where we can have a dining area, the choldren love sitting at the table and enjoying their play x

You are so right in saying just a few pieces can make a massive difference. Most of our furniture came from family when they downsized so very few things match… but when we get the odd new bit that we choose specifically for a certain place it makes such a difference! Love the look of your new dining room, it works perfectly together.
Looking really nice and the unit is ace. Our dining room/family room is such a hotch potch of items. One day I would love it to look more coordinated.

Hooray for getting rid of the carpet. It did look at bit orange! Your new room looks so clutter-free and relaxing. I love the dresser, you clearly do have an eye for interiors. I find this kind of thing so difficult.
