I married a scientist who had worked in many labs both making cosmetic products and then medicines. I met him aged 20 when he had ambitions to be a science teacher. It is a career in which he has been Second in Science before moving up the ranks and becoming an assistant headteacher. I on the other hand am a humanities specialist, preferring essays to experiments but it has given our three children the best of both worlds.
At the moment we are knee deep in Science past papers and mark schemes as Chloe has her GCSE exams next month. Ask her what she thinks of science right now and it is probably not pretty but science is so important and she is determined to do well. The STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) are where tomorrows job shortages are going to be and we need to get all children into science in order to fill this gap. It is also where there is money to be earnt! I want my children to be both happy and successful and for me this equates to giving them plenty of opportunities so that they can make the right choices for themselves.
The children are not of similar ages being 15, 11 and 5 but there are certainly differences that I can recall about playing and especially about science. Dylan has always liked lego and been interested in physics, he likes knowing about planets and he is very logical and mathematical. I have always believed that him being so left handed contributes to how he thinks. In comparison Chloe prefers biology and utilises it in her quest to become a better sports person. As a tween Chloe would enjoy science kits that included making bath bombs whereas Dylan would prefer a microscope
Erin is different yet again and I want to encourage her to have an understanding of her world. She has always loved the garden and exploring it, give her a spade and she has always occupied herself in my flower borders. Therefore when trends UK contacted me to see if we would like a science set to review I opted for a set for Erin and I choose the Nature and micro world which consisted of a Discovery Microscope and the Discovery Bug Barn. Erin has made the most of it whilst the sun has been shining in the garden.
We have hunted for bugs and looked at flowers close up. It has kept her entertained and inquisitive for hours. I like these sorts of educational toys. They help her ask intelligent questions and I am hoping that this will develop a love of Science that will stay with her.
Disclosure: Treads gifted Erin the products for the purpose of the review.
