Guiding Them (and Yourself): 6 Approaches to Being a Better Parent Again

Do you feel that you are past it as a parent sometimes? You might think that just because your children have hit a certain age, there is no point in learning to refine your skills because you may think that the damage is already done. But becoming a better parent and, in fact, becoming a better person is a challenge where you can pick up the baton at any stage of your life. But what are the ways for you to start being a better parent by drawing a line in the sand?

Decide What You Want to Work On

Many people have no idea where to start. But when you are trying to be a better parent, the best place for you to begin is to look at the areas where you are putting your child at risk. These are behaviours where you could be hurting somebody emotionally or even physically. Sometimes the solution is staring you in the face, and it could be to do with something like addictive behaviours. Of course, while rehabs are one approach that you can go down if you are looking to make changes, you have to remember that you can’t change everything at once. Because if you try to change every single aspect of your behaviour that you think is detrimental to your child, you could run the risk of alienating them.

Choose Exactly What You Want to Change

When you look at the aspects that make an impact on who you are morally, you need to understand that there is more than one way to skin a cat. You can break a behaviour down into a number of different pieces and work on them one at a time. If you want to be a better parent, you can apply this to yourself but also remember that you can apply it to your child. For example, if your child swears at you and storms up to their room. You can break down this problem into why they swore and what they could do the next time they get upset. Even if they don’t come up with a suggestion, you can come up with a few yourself and get them to choose one option. It’s far better to try and tackle one thing at a time because this will make it manageable.

Remembering the Importance of Open Communication

If you are trying to change your behaviour or you are trying to alter your response to a behaviour, it’s important to sit down with your child and explain what the change will be. Depending on the scenario, it could be met with indifference but you could also find that it descends into an argument. But instead, think about being clear on what you are going to do and if you are working on helping your child with a specific change you’ve got to be clear on what you expect from them. If they turn it into an argument, you need to stay away from this and explain calmly how you understand how it could be frustrating but this is how it will work from now on. It’s also a good idea to keep what you have to say to a bare minimum. If you want to instigate communication, don’t get into the habit of making speeches.

Set Out a Very Definite Goal

Being a better parent is about setting very specific and measurable goals. When you are setting out what the goal is, whether it’s about getting your child to not swear anymore or you need to start listening to your child more, it’s about coming up with steps and planning what you can do next time. It’s so easy to blame external circumstances, especially if you want to be a better parent. You might think that if your child is not listening to you, this is going to fall on deaf ears, but sometimes when it comes to setting a goal, you’ve got to remember that it’s not going to land right away. Being a parent is not about democratising the situation either. What you have to remember is that when you are approaching a problem, you need to aim to change perceptions gradually over time.

Emotions and Empathy Are Not Key to Effective Parenting

Being a better parent, for many people, is about being more friendly with their children. You may think that you are being too strict and therefore you think you need to relax more with your kids, but it’s also important to remember that if you try to sugarcoat everything with emotion and appeal to their empathy, a lot of children just don’t experience much empathy for others. But this is because they are not in touch with their feelings yet. If you are trying to be a better parent but your child is doing something like lying or manipulation, you’ve got to not appeal to their emotions, but ask them about how they feel about their decisions. This way, they are becoming aware of the consequences of their actions and how it affects them.

Keeping Your Stance as an Authority Figure

If you’re trying to be a better parent because you are feeling guilty you’re not spending time with them or you are just too busy in other areas of your life, you still need to remember that you are the parent and therefore you need to be an authority figure in the right way. This doesn’t mean having to be a stern authority figure but about remembering there are limits and consequences to everything. You can’t change your child, but you can change yourself. And this is why, as human beings, we all benefit from the right combination of motivation and consequences. If we want to be better people, we’ve got to remember the consequences of our actions. And this means that we’ve got to be effective at laying down the law.

You may find that you are a stressed parent more often than not, but if you want to become a more effective parent you have to remember that it is never too late to change yourself and to guide your child in the right direction.
