Secondary students are typically getting ready for the future. They might be preparing to head to college, go to a vocational school or even start a new job. Not all high school students love science as their favorite subject but here are a few ways to help them enjoy learning a bit more.
Find a Science that is Interesting and Productive
Science classes for high school or secondary school students are typically biology, physics, chemistry and environmental science. In the United States, you need 4 years of science to graduate high school. Some years are already picked out for the students, for instance, some schools might have life science as the mandatory science for all 9th graders. But as you get into the older grades, you usually have a choice of different science classes. If you notice that a student has a little more trouble in math, them chemistry might not be the best option for them if you want to keep their GPA high. Trying biology or environmental science might be more beneficial to them since those types of sciences deal more with memorization and learning key facts. On the other hand, if you have a student who does well in math and thrives on hands on types of learning, chemistry and physics would probably be better for them. Picking a class that is interesting to them will help keep their focus much better.
Make Sure They Are Utilizing Their Skills
Each person is different and can learn in a different way. And each study of science can be learned in different ways as well. If you have some students in a mandatory class of biology who are much better with hands on projects, try to utilize that to your advantage. Do some class experiments like dissection or even field trips that can help all your students have an equal advantage of learning. The same can apply to students that are having trouble in chemistry or physics. If you notice that some kids are much better with memorization than in experiments, try to find exercises that they can use to their benefit.
Engage Students
Sometimes getting high school students engaged in science can be tough. But to learn science, you need to make it fun and engaging. Asking questions and having your students participate in discussions or even debates can be a fun way to find their stance. Have them think on a deeper level. This can open up a lot of experiments as well. For instance, you can have them all set a hypothesis on recycling and them actually do their own experiments to prove their theories. This is not only a fun way to learn but it will engage them to think outside the box.
Make Science Challenging But Fun
STEM is a big thing that schools and homeschools are using to help kids have fun with science. These types of lessons bring in all different kinds of learning including kinesthetic learners. Plus they are great for kids who want to go into careers in science, engineering, math or technology in the future. If you start doing STEM lessons early, students will get a better grasp on them as they get older.
Keep A Science Notebook
Having students keep a science notebook for all their ideas, journal entries and experiments will help tremendously. It will not only be filled with valuable information for the student but they can also make it personal to them. Journaling is a wonderful way to help visual learners get a better grasp on a subject as well.
All of these suggestions are great ways to help high school students understand science a bit better. But not all students are the same. If you notice your child is having some trouble in their class, looking up secondary science tuition costs in your area might be beneficial.
