How You Can Encourage Your Kids to Pick Up Different Skills

Being a parent is a full-time job. You’re a counselor, a caregiver, a personal chef, and you’re a teacher all bundled together in one role. Even when your children grow older and more independent, or when they go to school, you still have to take on these jobs and more.

As a teacher, it’s important to help your children learn how to love learning. They don’t just need to learn a school curriculum, but they also need to learn how to exercise their brains and bodies outside of school. Here are a few ways that you can help your kids to not only have a well-rounded education but also to take control of their own learning.

Encourage Reading

One of the best ways for children to learn how to teach themselves is to read. Reading is a necessary life skill, but it can also be a great way to enrich your child’s life.

When your child is young, read with them. Some parents like to read stories at bedtimes as part of a routine. This helps you to bond with your child, helps them to feel loved and secure, and it exposes them to different stories. Stories are a wonderful way to help children to grow creatively.

As your kids get older, you can teach them to read for themselves. Encourage your children to read independently by trying to instill a love of books. Bear in mind that now all children are the same. Some will enjoy reading more than others, but it’s still a good idea to encourage good reading habits.

Don’t make reading a chore, but think of incentives to encourage kids to read more.

Developing Hobbies and Skills

Children develop hobbies when they start to build their personalities. Some hobbies are transitory and only last a few years. But other hobbies will stick with your children for life.

Hobbies and interests are also a way that children differentiate themselves and start to make friends who share the same interests. The best way to help your children develop hobbies is to introduce them to different activities.

You can start with hobbies that you have. If you like gardening, consider letting your children help you in the garden. Some children will pick up your hobbies and adopt them as their own. But again, this doesn’t always happen.

Not sharing hobbies with your children doesn’t have to be a bad thing. You should still take an interest in the things your child enjoys and help them pursue them. You might be able to find groups and other extracurricular activities that align with your child’s interests.

Some hobbies involve certain skills, like playing an instrument. Encourage your child to better themselves, but always bear in mind that pushing too hard can have a detrimental effect. Yes, some people can grow up and create careers out of their skills. But many people just enjoy playing an instrument for fun.

Learning Through Play and Puzzles

Toddlers learn most of what they know through playing. They play with toys, they learn fine motor skills. Building blocks teach them how to visualize and construct things. Playing with other children teaches social skills.

This doesn’t stop when your child gets older. Even adults can learn through play, as the more we do something, the more skills we pick up.

For example, puzzles teach logic and problem solving skills. It’s a bit like working out. When you exercise, you use and grow your muscles, even if you’re enjoying the exercise. If you do puzzles or play puzzle games like sudoku, you exercise your brain and train it to think more logically.

The great thing about puzzle games is that they’re so accessible. You can play them on the go on your phone, which means that if you or your child gets bored for a few minutes, they can entertain themselves in a productive manner.

Even other video games can have benefits and can teach your children applicable skills. Whether your child plays with other people or single player, they learn how to solve problems and work towards a specific goal.

Physical Exercise and Fun

On a similar note, it’s a good idea to encourage your child to have active hobbies. Team sports are a fantastic way to learn how to work together and keep fit. Modern life is sedentary and this is extremely unhealthy. While some people focus on weight, the real issue is a lack of physical fitness.

Different people have different interests, so what if your child isn’t interested in playing sports? Well there are other ways for them to keep active. Some kids prefer solo activities, or activities that don’t have a measure of competition,

Nature walks and hikes are an amazing way to teach your child all kinds of things, while helping them keep fit. Take short walks to start with, and make them enjoyable and interesting. A walk should be a treat. In nature, you can talk to them about the surroundings or you can use this opportunity to chat about things that might be concerning your child.

Another option is to work out. However, bear in mind that children have limits when it comes to things like weight training. While they’re growing, focus on fitness and gentler strength training so they can get strong and fit without potentially damaging themselves.

Practical Life Lessons

Finally, it’s up to you to teach your children things they won’t learn in school. Remember the many roles of a parent? You also need to teach your child how to fulfill those responsibilities when you aren’t around.

A regular chore routine can teach your child how to clean, as well as how to be responsible. You should also teach your child to cook. Even if they don’t enjoy it, it can be helpful to have a few recipes and techniques under their belt.

Finally, teach them the harder life lessons about finances, relationships, and everything else they will come across in life. They will need this in adulthood.
