As the snow started to fall I did wonder what I had let myself in for. I imagined being snowed in at the cinema, first thoughts were that watching films and eating popcorn wouldn’t be too hard, but then as I looked around the packed cinema I realised that being snowed in with a load of 7, 8 and 9 years olds would be my idea of hell rather than bliss. Thankfully it didn’t resort to that.
Going to the cinema is a real treat for us, having three children aged 12, 7 and 2 means that it is hard to find a film that suits them all. However when Warner Bros asked us if we would like to see Journey 2: The mysterious island on its opening weekend I knew this would appeal to the boy. I mentioned this to Dylan who was thrilled as one of the main characters is ‘The Rock’ of WWE fame. Therefore after a quick game of paper, rock, scissors we decided that mum, Dylan and his friend Jamie were off to the cinema whilst daddy stayed at home with Erin.
The cinema was really busy and the boys found themselves some seats and opened their sweets. The film has a number of themes that came through, its a story of a teenage boy bonding with his step father, finding his grandfather by cracking the code and locating the mysterious island and falling in love. Once on the island (found after a terrifying helicopter journey), big animals have become small and small animals have become big. The film is entertaining and the boys were engrossed. There are some funny one liners that made me chuckle and the boys giggle. There are some inconsistencies in the plot and the characters a bit stereotypical but the boys didn’t notice. On the way home, they were talking about the Journey and what they would have done if it happened to them. The visuals and effects were good, with the cast flying on bees and being chased by lizards.
We enjoyed this film for what it is, it was a great way to spend an afternoon and the boys were totally absorbed with the storyline and judging by the busy cinema it was what other children of the same age wanted to do on their Saturday afternoon also.
Journey 2 is in cinemas now in 2D and 3D.
