When I left school we spent the day in the park, the biggest thing to happen was one of the boys got thrown in the lake. That was secondary school – I can’t really remember leaving primary school. I expect we had a disco in the school hall.
Now it has all been replaced and bigged up. I have organised a couple of the Y11 leaving do’s, many of the students arrived in limo’s, the girls had hair done and really dressed up. The boys wore suits and they had their photo’s taken under the balloon arch. I think its quite nice, its a good ending especially as the school has no sixth form and the students go their own ways or like the school I am at now it does have a sixth form but many still opt to leave, start a college course or go into training.
However I didn’t realise how far down the key stages this had travelled. Chloe is leaving primary school this July and the limo’s have been booked, a prom (not a disco) is organised and dresses are being discussed. Is it too much too soon? Are we getting carried away? Chloe is going and it will cost a small fortune I am not strong enough not to be part of it and I certainly wouldn’t want Chloe to miss out and be different to her peers. Is this just harmless fun, celebrating the end of one stage or is it another example of rushing our children into being teens and losing the occassion of childhood.
In a few years will Erin be having a limo to celebrate leaving nursery?
