Maths Rockx Gives a Helping Hand with Learning Times Tables App

Erin loves school and loves learning and we often use apps including a times table app to support her learning.  Maths is something that she is good at! I put a lot of it down to my amazing parenting obviously and the fact that she is the youngest and therefore ahead of the game. Due to her hip dysplasia we spent more hours than most drawing, playing iPad apps, making things, telling stories and reading books.  What she lacked in physical capabilities she made up for in manual dexterity and fine motor skills. This set her up well for school.  I didn’t realise quite how academically able she was until last year. Whilst it is a lovely position to be in it does also bring challenges.

This year Erin has a fantastic teacher who challenges her. But it has taken a while to get to this stage.  At first, she was not challenged – that was no fault of the teacher but the curriculum just wasn’t stretching her.  Now that she is in YR2 it is much more task focussed and no free play and this works for her.

Erin does homework for fun, it is what she enjoys doing and so we are always searching out things to keep her entertained. The other two were not made of the same stuff and homework was like pulling teeth. Yet Erin came home with term 1 homework tasks and finished a terms work within a short space of time.  I actually had to make her stop and do something else! Thankfully technology has helped challenge Erin, one times table app is especially useful.

Literacy is her preferred subject, she writes stories and has a great imagination that develops characters and plots.  She says that Maths is harder yet her teachers would say that her Maths ability is actually stronger that literacy.  Therefore I have to help her with her confidence in Maths.  The new curriculum also has set things to cover and you can’t push on further but instead need to focus on greater depth of understanding.  This leaves me at home to let her go further.  We have tried a number of times table app in the past and it is very much part of what we do.

Erin loves music almost as much as she loves school! She knows lots of current music due to having a bedroom opposite her 16 year old sister.  Therefore I knew the times table app Maths Rockx app would interest her.  I downloaded it easily to Erin’s iPad.  I introduced her to it and she was immediately jumping about to the tunes. Here you can see what Erin’s first impressions were.

As you saw I have set her a challenge so do come back next week to see how she has got on. Within the times table app there is also a quiz feature so we shall be using that to track her progress.  My first impressions are that Maths Rockx will work for so many children.  Whether you use the app to consolidate knowledge, to stretch the able child or to support those finding times tables challenging I think most children will benefit from this fun interactive approach.
