Being a working mum is not easy. I feel as though I am always chasing my tail. When they are sick you feel guilty and when you are just about managing something comes along to spoil it all.
As I was darting out of the nursery door a piece of paper was thrust upon me. Knowing it wasn’t time for a bill again I screwed it into my pocket to be forgotton to read later.
When later came the words, nativity, angel and christmas jumped out and swam before my eyes. Now don’t get me wrong I love Christmas. I love buying and wrapping, I love the festive season – except for one thing…
Parents usually choose to use a nursery because they are working parents. See that word ‘working’. It means I can’t pop out for a quick trip to church on a working day at 10.30 in the morning. I don’t get annual leave – teachers can’t take time in lieu. We can’t pop out and pop back in. Then I started thinking that it isn’t just those of us with 13 weeks holiday that can’t do this. Most parents don’t work near their nursery. Therefore popping out to the nativity is a whole morning.
It is no better once they start school. I will be missing the KS2 Christmas assembly. If I was able to go to one – whose do you choose? What if you have three children like me, do you have to pull straws, do a raffle over which child gets mummy sitting in the audience?
Instead I’ll be the mummy needing to buy the DVD copy of the performance, the mummy feeling guilty yet again.

I so so so so so get this. I’m back at school 5 days a week and am dreading the letter about the Christmas services. My little man has just started school and the fact I never take him or his sister in really gets to me. Soon they will be using breakfast clubs and after school clubs and will probably be sick of being at school 9+ hours a day. But there is no alternative. I would be miserable at home 5 days a week. Need to start looking for job shares! 😉 x
