Reading with Ebookadabra and Developing a Love of Reading

Reading for pleasure is so important and if you took a look on my kindle you would see that I read a diverse range of books.  There are academic books on Blogging, Law of Attraction books on making money but underneath those titles are chick flicks and classics.  I will read pretty much anything.  My holiday would not be complete without reading several books as fast as I can.

I know that I have always been a avid reader, my mum loved books and I just followed her.  My older two don’t read as much and it does bother me.  The children are products of their time and spend more time gaming or using social media.  With hindsight wish I had restricted their online time more when they were younger.

I would read to them each day and I thought that would be enough to instil a love of reading.  With Erin I am determined that she will enjoy reading more.  At the moment she does and she will read my old Roald Dahl books and I hope that this continues.  I think one way to instil this in younger readers is to embrace the technology and recognise how reading habits have changed.

Erin was invited to try EBookadabra.  Ebookadabra is an app that gives access to a wide range of books with the promise of more to follow. Ebookadabra aims to be a one-stop solution for children’s reading designed for kids between the ages of 3 and 7. The app allows kids to read hundreds of books from leading publishers such as Disney and Harper Collins. By doing so they unlock educational puzzles, games, collectable stickers and much more.

The app allows:

– The ability for parents to record themselves reading the stories that their children are looking at

– A safe and secure messaging system that allows a child to talk to their parents about the progress they are making in app.

– An innovative visual search engine designed for kids that lets the use visual search terms to explore our library of books.

– The ability to save stories to your in-app library so you can enjoy them on the go.

– All of this is available for less than the price of a book a month £5.99 along with a 30 day free trial. Even better if you sign up now it is just 99p per month.  What are you waiting for – quick go do it now!

Our thoughts on EBookadabra

  • Erin is at the upper end of the age range (she turned 7 in November) and she is also above average in terms of academic success.  As a result we looked more at the books for this age group and there were some great titles.  There were stories from Disney including Frozen which is one of Erin’s favourites.
  • She was able to use the app independently and read the stories on her iPad.  Furthermore Erin really enjoyed accessing stories this way.  She commented it was like reading on a kindle like mummy does.
  • Another advantage is the ease of using iPad to read.  It meant that when out in the car she could read without taking books, ideal for long car journeys.
  • The cost is brilliant as it is a much cheaper way of getting books. As more titles are added or if you have siblings it is a really cost effective way of reading new titles.
  • To keep Erin entertained I look forward to seeing more titles available including books for independent readers and those with a higher reading age.
  • There are also games and puzzles to play which encouraged Erin to read more.  She enjoyed unlocking the games and this aids her enjoyment of reading.

We recommend EBookadabra and would encourage everyone to try the free trial.  Reading is a gift and as a teacher I know ‘Reading Makes You Brainy’.  Those that develop a love of books and a love of reading statistically do better at school. They achieve higher grades and go on to greater things. To develop a lifelong love of books children need to start reading from a young age.  Technology is important in our modern life and therefore mixing the old with the new is a sure fire way to encourage reading.
