The first Furby frenzy passed me by, I was at University and I do remember they were top of the wish list for many children. I had been a child of the Tamagotchi (hands up if you remember them) revolution and thought Furby’s were a more modern version. This year has seen Furby rise once again to the top the toy charts. This Furby Boom really does take a modern edge as it now has its own app for the ipad (and other apple products).
Direct Line offered to send us a Furby Boom to review and also reminded us that Christmas is a time when we often buy and receive expensive goods and we need to make sure that we are well insured and covered for what we have. Home insurance should be checked regularly to make sure we are not under insured if the worst happens.
Our Furby arrived and although no-one had specifically asked for one I thought it would be a fun present. Erin has adored it since it was opened.
At first I was a little unsure of what it did but soon realised how responsive it is. You can tickle or cuddle the Furby and it responds. You choose a name for the Furby and it will respond. It talks a mixture of English and its own gobbledegook and my youngest clearly has a new friend! I had seen on Facebook that many parents of Furby’s get distressed with the furby refusing to sleep and talking incessantly. However you can turn it off (just don’t tell Jane at Northernmum who doesnt know this!!) by pulling the tail for ten seconds which sends Furby into a blissful sleep.
Using the app brings more adventures as you can play games, lay eggs and even feed and clean the furby. It really does become one of the family. It is supposed to be like having a pet. My children would like a dog but that isn’t going to happen. This is the nearest they will get to a responsive pet!
MY VERDICT:
It’s fun although it can be noisy. I wouldn’t want to do a long car journey with our Furby but I do like its interaction. Erin laughs at her new friend and if she is happy I’m happy. They cost at £59.99 which is a lot if your child will tire of this type of toy quickly. For me to spend that much on a toy I would need the child to really convince me it was really wanted and not a passing phase before I bought one.
