Which appliance can you live without? We seem to have cupboards and worktops filled with small appliances that promise to save me time, make life easier or turn me into a culinary ace. My kitchen is bursting with these but not many are used. Here are the ones I use and the ones I don’t
- Slow cooker, this is great and I love it. My little lot like proper meals, they want their plate piled high with meat, veg and potatoes. Therefore I do use the slow cooker regularly. I throw in some beef and ale or gammon and coke and eight hpurs later the children appreciate it. It takes little effort and keep them happy. There favourite is beef cooked this way.
- Food Processor, never comes out, its huge. I have more attachments than I know what to do with and I have no idea what most of them do. The only things that have ever been in the food processor are eggs, flour and butter to make a cake! However most of the time I don’t use it as Erin like the mixing and therefore we do it in a bowl.
- The microwave, now this one I use daily but last week it stopped working. It confused Dyl who tried turning it on three times before he realised it was not warming his croissant, Chloe too gave the eggs a strange look when they didn’t magically turn fluffy and light after two minutes in the microwave. Making my porridge is a faff too so I think I will replace this one even though I didn’t think it was important. It shows which ones we rely on, I can live without it but it is convenient to have one. If you need an appliance in an urgency, sometimes a short term loan helps you out of a sticky situation.
- Coffee machine, you know the ones that were all the rage just a few years ago. Mine is now redundant in the cupboard along with the capsules that go in it.
- Smoothie maker, another gadget that was trendy, mine can make soups, smoothies and all manner of things. Have I ever made soup – no. The teen uses it the most to make milkshakes! It is an expensive gadet for that. Dyl actually wanted to take it to sch last week as they were making smoothies and were being told have to peel and chop the fruit beforehand. Dyl suggested you just buy a good blender and chuck it all in with some ice!
- Toastie maker, this one we use all the time. It is handy for the children to make themselves a toastie when I am not about, it is real comfort food too, so a winner in my cupboard.
- Electric whisk, again this never comes out the cupboard, the only time I’ve used it I have blown flour everywhere. It makes more mess than it saves.

I know exactly how you feel about the processor! I got sucked into the sales assistant’s talk on how fantastic the more expensive model was and the “look at all the attachments!” thus making me feel like I was paying a lot less than what it really costs and how I can save so much space because I wouldn’t need 5 other appliances in my kitchen. Nope, none of that was true. I think I probably end up using the 5 other appliances he said I could rid of compared to the processor that now sits soundly at the top shelf of our garage!
