If you are looking to give a room a summer makeover you can do this without spending a fortune. When we redecorated the living room I chose a grey sofa (or two). This means it is relatively neutral and I can update the soft furnishing whenever I choose. Many now update a room on seasonal changes, making rooms lighter in the summer. Then changing up the room to make it more snuggly in the autumn before going all out festive for winter. I have been looking for Smart Ways to Bring the Light Inside this Summer.
This is definitely a change that has occurred with millennials. I don’t recall my parents changing their rooms to reflect the seasons apart from some tinsel decorations in December!
These are some of my favourite pieces from Debenhams who have Up to 20% off* home products currently. The cushion is my favourite and certainly brings summer into the living room. I also like to have fresh flowers as obviously they smell good. Some summer scents in the living room definitely brings the garden inside.

Another way to bring more light into house is using clean wooden roof windows from Solstro. The window lets in much more natural light and can turn dark areas into calms of oasis.
Start on the outside by keeping bushes and trees under control near your windows. My dining room is quite dark because our double garage blocks light into this room. We also have a number of very tall pine tress that are all protected just outside our boundary. There is not much I can do about this so I need to get creative inside.
Clean your windows to let lots of natural light in. This is a great reason to employ a window cleaner if you don’t have the time or inclination to clean them!
Mirrors can also help with bouncing light around darker rooms and this is why I have a big mirror in the hallways. Also use light furniture, heavy dark woods make everything seem darker.
Glass tables like my gin table are making a come back. They allow light to move through them and certainly do not darken areas.
Shiny surfaces also bounce light around. Copper is on trend right now too, so invest in a few key pieces.
Finally make your floors lighter. You could strip them back and paint them white or cream. Many choose to do this on stairs because these areas can be dark with little natural light. In hallways you could cheat with a light runner or a rug in the living room. These soft furnishing can trick your eyes to appear lighter.
These tips will enable your home to feel lighter and this often make it appear bigger too. Do you have any other tips for creating space and light?
