Taking Control of Our Family’s Health: Why We Turned to Private Medical Insurance

Health is something you never want to take for granted — and yet, like many families, we’ve had our fair share of health scares over the years. Whether it’s been navigating the system for a child with recurring illnesses or waiting months for answers to ongoing symptoms, there have been times when the worry has been made worse by long delays and limited options.

That’s what first led me to consider private medical insurance. I’ll admit, the idea initially felt a bit daunting, and I questioned whether it was designed for families like mine. We are not mega high earners; we live in a typical detached house with three kids who attend local state schools. As public service workers, there is a mindset shift around ‘going private’ for services.

But the more we faced long waits, unanswered questions, and fragmented care, the more I began to wonder if there was a better way.

Why We Considered Private Health Insurance

Our kids have, over the years, had some health issues and post-injury concerns that have meant they’ve needed to see consultants and have physio for rehab.

Erin especially has had a number of health issues due to hip dysplasia, hypermobility syndrome and general aches and pains that have caused us to be at the mercy of the NHS more than we care for. This is the child who has been on the surgeon’s table 7 times, spent 24 weeks in a spica cast, had more midnight runs to the children’s ward for croup than most, and at one point was under 6 different hospital departments, including podiatry, ENT, rheumatology, paediatrics and more.

At this point, I just wanted answers, and I really wanted one consultant to look at her holistically rather than just treating their bit of the body.

Furthermore, PMI sounded confusing with so many options, jargon, and price points; I wasn’t even sure where to start. But the peace of mind that comes with knowing your family can access care quickly, see specialists sooner, and have more control over where and when you’re treated? That felt worth exploring.

The Benefits of Private Medical Insurance

Private health insurance isn’t just for serious illnesses — it’s about proactive care. Here are a few of the reasons we made the leap:

  • Shorter waiting times: We’ve all heard stories of people waiting months for a scan or operation. With private cover, you can often be seen and treated much faster, which makes a huge difference when you’re worried.
  • Access to specialists: You can choose who you see and where. For us, that meant being able to explore more targeted care options for a specific concern without being passed from pillar to post.
  • Private hospital rooms: It might sound like a small thing, but having your own space when you’re unwell can make recovery less stressful and more comfortable.
  • Flexible appointments: Early morning, evening, or weekend slots can make life easier when you’re juggling work, kids, and everything else life throws at you.

My Own Health Scare Made Me Even More Grateful for PMI

I myself, also had a health scare a few years back and needed several tests and using PMI made this a quick and simple process. When you are a busy working parent, trying to juggle appointments is real. If you have no flexibility around appointments, it can make life all the more challenging at an already stressful time.

Choosing the right policy and knowing where to start can be overwhelming, thankfull,y now Usay Compare makes this so much easier!

Confidence and Peace of Mind

Having PMI makes me feel so much more confident knowing that, if something happens, we’ve got options. We can get help quickly. We won’t be left in limbo. And that’s a huge weight off my shoulders as a parent.

  1. This is definitely something worth considering. We used to have PMI under my husband’s old job but now that he has moved we have lost the privilege. I definitely like the safety net knowing it was there. Family health is so important.
