The Ox Cheltenham Review

Cheltenham has a wonderful array of restaurants to cater to different tastes and there is no shortage when it comes to eating out. The Ox Cheltenham is a hidden gem in the town and has it all with a beautiful setting, cool cocktails and a fabulous menu. I recently went to sample the new autumn menu and was left blown away by the food.

The Ox Cheltenham definitely caters for meat eaters and is well known for its steaks – I would go so far as to say the best steaks in the town. However, there is much more to the menu which I was invited to come and sample.

Where is The Ox Cheltenham?

The Ox is situated at 10 Cambray Place, Cheltenham, GL50 1JS and helpfully there is paid for parking outside and plenty on the side roads which are paid at the meters. The opening hours are: Lunch from 12pm – 2:30, Wednesday to Saturday
Dinner and drinks from 5pm – 10:30pm, Tuesday to Saturday
Sunday Roasts and afternoon drinks on the terrace from 12pm – 4pm every Sunday

The New Autumn Menu

I took Lee as my plus one as I can’t cook steak and knew he would appreciate a decent meal! We arrived and were invited to try a cocktail or two, some of the other bloggers opted for some lovely sounding alcoholic ones but seeing as I was driving they mixed me up a mocktail which tasted fabulous.

We then took our place in The Ox Cheltenham private dining area where a cacophony of bloggers came together to be fed.

Our starters included charcoal roasted mushrooms, persillade, roasting juices, sourdough toast. This was my favourite. We were also invited to try deep fried pigs head served with a poached egg. That is something I would never order off a menu but after trying it I was surprised and enjoyed it!.

The mains consisted of steak and lots of it! Lee was in meat heaven and kept going despite being full! I can honestly say it was the best steak I’ve had and I will certainly recommend The Ox for this reason alone! I think what makes The Ox so good is that they have a commitment to using local and seasonal produce wherever possible. This was evident in the taste and I think something that consumers are more aware of now and what they want.

I made sure that I saved some room for dessert too as I have a sweet tooth! I wasn’t disappointed and the sorbets and ice creams were refreshing and also delicious.

The Setting

The Ox is a below ground level and very welcoming. As you enter there is a place to hang your coats before being welcomed to the bar which has a super selection of wines.

The eatery is modern with rustic furniture. It is a really cosy environment ideal for intimate meals and family times.

Offers at The Ox Cheltenham

The Ox offers some great offers including a pre- theatre dinner package of a 60z rump, fries, peppercorn sauce and a glass of wine for just £15. This Early Bird offer is available Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm-7pm.

There is also a burger deal on a Wednesday.

I can thoroughly recommend an evening at The Ox and look forward to a return visit.
