When I surf the internet most days for inspiration on what to write about, it is great to see hundreds of mums creating their own website to talk about their own personal experience and share their helpful tips and tricks, but for anyone looking to make the jump from employee to blogger – there are few things to think about before you make the jump (not to mention the budget planning!)
Children and Mummy Blog: While these exist aplenty on the web and I enjoy reading them, it is no longer the niche it once was. With many new mothers a lot more socially-active, starting a blog in this vertical needs lots of attention and always helps if you have something unique to say.
Finance Blog: While this is a profitable channel to choose, unless you are clued in on the stock markets and the latest markets news, it is hard to offer real-time information that people want to read. Try narrowing down to a niche like Currency or Commodities like Oil rather than try to cover everything
Travel Blog: Although this is a heavily-plugged industry, there is still space for a decent writer to make some money here, as evident from the number of freelance requests for travel-related content. Talking about where you went as a child isn’t going to peak everyone’s interest, but if you’re out backpacking and want to talk about the latest travel equipment or enjoy Golfing holidays and want to cover the best courses from around the world … there is a business to be started.
Industry Blog: Many of you would have worked before in a particular industry and gleaned a lot of information and experience from it. While this is a great way to share what you know and connect with like-minded people, be sure to have a think as to how widespread the industry is anything too specific, may end up with a limited viewer base and therefore limited earning base.
Toys and Games Blog: While many of you may be familiar with the ‘Youtubers’ that have found fame showcasing the latest tech or dressing up dolls, but what you may not have seen is the millions of people that have tried and unfortunately failed. Before you look at this as a potential opportunity, remember to try it first before you immerse yourself completely.
Of course there are a ton of other options for you to choose and while blogging itself is generally easy, making a business out of it requires just as much dedication and research as most ‘9 to 5’ jobs. If you are determined enough though and have a passion for social media already, then this may well be a new horizon for you to explore, and one that may well pay enough for you to carry it on for years to come. Thank you for the tips. I left my ‘proper’ job 5 years ago when I had my son and have worked part time in a supermarket to survive since then but I need more of a challenge so am thinking of taking the leap as it’s not entirely impossible to live without the very little i make now so hoping it is worth the gamble. You are right though, it’s pretty over saturated so I really need to work on my niche! x
