When I think of Cambridge I imagine the University and a city full of school charm and academics. However there seems to be much more going on this this bustling city which offers plenty of attractions for all visitors. Cambridge has been on my radar since planning a trip to East Anglia. We are quite typical I think in that when planning short breaks for the school holidays we tend to head down west rather than venturing east. It means that we have visited much of Devon and Cornwall. Those were the trips I went on as a child and the same destinations to which I automatically head to with my own family. However I want to explore more and head to different parts of the country. We lived in Kent for a year after University but have never headed to Anglia.
Cambridge seems to have plenty there I love the history of the University City and would have to go punting on the River Cam if I get there.
June would be a great time to visit as the streets become alive with street entertainers and buskers at the street performers festival. This runs from 12th – 14th June. The Big Weekend runs in July and will have live music and fireworks happening at various points throughout the city.
With a city rich in history and architecture it is not surprising there are a few spooky bits! If you enjoy getting to grips with the places history staying overnight at a local hotel will put you in a great place to join in with one of the city’s Ghost Walks.
If shopping is your way of relaxing you will be spoilt for choice as Cambridge boasts a wide choice of shops from daily markets to an abundance of boutiques, independent shops, high street brands and designer labels. Cambridge has it all so take your bank cards!!
For us we would then head to Wandlebury Country Park which sounds great for a family day out. It boasts of a natural adventure playground it has picnic areas and safe places to explore the countryside. All this sounds ideal for when the children need some space to run free. The Cambridge Science Centre also is a advertised as a great place for younger children who are looking for hands on exhibitions. You never know iit might inspre them to aim for Cambridge University!
I will definitely be planning a trip to this side of the country in the summer as then it will be another county ticked off my list. I want the children to know as much as the UK as they can. We have such a rich culture and history that it is important that they know it.
