One of the many benefits of parenting tweens and teens is that you can once again pick up any hobbies that you may have put down for a few years. As a parent is it easy to abandon our own past times when there is a mountain of washing and day trips revolve around baby led needs. As far as activities go I like to try new things and I enjoy adrenalin based activities like abseiling, kayaking, ropes courses and the list goes on. I found a love of water sports aged about 15 when I was doing school based PE lessons. I would choose to sail, windsurf or kayak whenever I could and enjoyed school residentials where we did this for five days and camped out at night. Chloe is following me and I am very jealous that in June she gets to go to Ardeche for 10 days of activities.
Being a youth leader meant I was able to indulge in more adventures like this and I am glad that my children are following in my adventurous footsteps. We are incredibly lucky to live in an area where there are a host of activities like this on our doorstep. We have the beautiful Royal Forest of Dean and all it has to offer and we are near to Wales and all it has to offer in the Brecon Beacons or the beautiful Gower. As I child we would holiday in Tenby and near the Gower – my nan is Welsh so visiting her home town would be a day trip out in the summer months. My teen often crosses the border for Hockey matches and I teased her at the start of the season by giving her her passport to give to her hockey coach before they left! She did nearly fall it and resorted to google to check whether we were playing her! Obviously a passport is not needed to enter Wales, all that is required is some enthusiasm and a smile.
Visit Wales and Berghaus asked me what I would pack to take to Wales. Firstly I would use one of Berghaus rucksacks that would ensure that my hands are free for doing activities. I would head for an activity center and want to do some climbing. Therefore I would also have my long trousers and long sleeved top which are practical for activities. I would have bottles of water to keep hydrated. My camera would be with me to get some awesome shots of the family and I doing some climbing. A Go Pro is on my wish list for just this type of day!
After a picnic lunch in some pretty spot (with homemade Welsh Cakes obviously) we would don the swimming costume or wetsuit (depending on the time of year) which would have been slung in the car for doing some water sports. A cap too as it keeps the sun out of your eyes when your too busy having fun. Once the sun had started to set we could finish of with fish and chips overlooking some of the beautiful coast.
This would be a pretty much prefect day spent in Wales for me.
Disclosure: I received a rucksack with some goodies in exchange for this post.
