What’s your most treasured possession?

This question got me thinking – oh and if your mentally answering, you can’t answer with the names of your children or any other people. It is about possessions. I like to think I am not that materialistic, that I am more sentimental. I don’t care for cars or fancy appliances so long as they do the job they were bought for I am happy. I don’t have loads of jewelry and I tend to forget to put it on or or it sits looking pretty in a box.

Photographs are something that I treasure although in a digital society I take lots more and the photo’s are so much better than they used to be. Maybe if I had stunning photographs of the children as babies I would immediately think of them – but they are not that great unfortunately. The photos of Chloe are mostly blurred, snapped on an old old camera in the days before we own a digital camera. I remember getting such photo’s back and looking through the newly developed images and sighing a little to myself -they were never as good as I had hoped for! I was the same with Dylan although by this point we did have a digital camera. Erin’s baby photos are also disappointingly lacking as a certain husband had let the batteries die even though he thought it was fully charged.

I don’t have any old teddies that were loved and cherished throughout childhood that still holds fond memories. I even sold my clarinet to go on holiday with the girls aged 17! Nothing was sacred to me at that age!

Therefore I have struggled to answer this- memories don’t really count as possessions do they? I finally thought of things like my pandora bracelet, I bought it myself as a gift to myself. The charms have been picked and given as presents by the children, the husband and my parents, therefore they mean alot to me. My wedding ring, engagement and eternity rings are obviously important too.

Another treasured possession is my wedding dress. When I bought it I convinced myself I would wear it again – the corset was navy and gold and I thought I’d wear it to another function. I was wrong it still sits in suitcase in the garage. The dress that my nan made for Chloe as our flowergirl hangs now in Erin’s wardrobe. That is something I will never part with, like the beautiful poorly quilt she made. The poorly quilt is a hand made cross stitched wadded cover that nan made after I had Chloe – it now comes out whenever the children are poorly. It is that bit of comfort. Those are treasured possessions.

Reflecting on this question has been quite heartwarming it has reminded me what is important to me. Obviously if I could have picked people I would have! Another thought is what happens to your treasured possessions?  I want to pass the Pandora and my rings my girls – I guess I’ll need to write that all down somewhere as you wouldn’t want these treasured possessions become the source of arguments or even will disputes at a later date.  Therefore make sure you make the necessary documents so everything is clear.

I would love to throw this out there and ask what your most treasured possession is?

  1. My old photo albums; my diaries from high school and university; a box of old letters; my mom’s handwritten recipe index book; my and my mom’s watches and engagement rings; an old Japanese print of a cat that has hung in my bedroom since I was a baby and now hangs in my lounge. I feel better now that all my digital photos are stored in the Cloud as well as on my hard drive – so would no longer try to save my hard drive from a house fire! But more prosaically I would probably make a grab for my camera and my phone 🙂

  2. although the vast majority of people will value regular things such as those covered above, in odd occasions we get to hear of people who have inherited some very strange items, from the mundane (set of pens) to the questionable (stuffed pets).
