Windsurfing and me

I am just back for an amazing week in sunny Corsica, I popped over for the week taking both Dylan and Erin.  We had an amazing time learning new skills and refreshing old ones thanks to Mark Warner Holidays.  I have never been on a Mark Warner Holiday before and I am very impressed, the watersports on offer are first class and the waterfront staff so fantastic.  There will be a few blog posts about the stay but I just wanted to share a few images for now.  I didn’t take these photos as I am the subject!  Instead the lovely Amanda at The Ana Mum Diary acted as my personal paparazzi and full credit goes to her for these images.

I learnt to windsurf when I was 16 and immediately I loved it. I was really looking forward to taking to the water again and reliving the exhilaration I used to feel when having lessons with school at South Cerney.  I also love kayaking and have done that many times since but the opportunity to windsurfing has not come up.  I haven’t really done it since a holiday in France aged 18 but thought it wouldn’t be too hard to pick it up again.

I was wrong!

I really struggled as my feet are not as agile as they once were, my arms not as a strong and I clearly have no core strength anymore! However I still loved it and enjoyed having a go.  I would like to say I took to it like a natural but I didn’t and I limped away after my lesson and realised that after falling off rather spectacularly that I had hurt my foot.  When the cocktails didn’t take away the pain I realised I had probably pulled a muscle.  I kept going through the holiday even going out kayaking with Erin.  I was gutted not to be able to try paddle boarding but seeing as standing on the ground was painful there was no way I could stand at sea.  Long story short I went to  A&E once back home and as I expected I have a chunk of bone missing from my fifth metatarsal and I’m sporting crutches!  I was worried about being cast as I have another holiday coming up and will be flying. Thankfully lots of rest should have me healed in no time.

However I do have these gorgeous photos to show that I did indeed have a go!

  1. Whatever, I am massively impressed!
It is funny though, my ability to do extreme sports is changing as I get older -but I think it is because I am far less of an adrenaline junky, getting too risk-averse to do jumps on my snowboard etc!

  2. Ouch! Sorry about your foot, that does sound painful. But I hope the cocktails did help a little bit to numb the pain. Hope its cleared up for your next adventure xx

  3. Aw Emma, I hope your foot is feeling better soon.

I think you did amazing just trying it – I find that the older I get, the less I’m willing to do things that put me out of my comfort zone x x

  4. Oh Emma I’m sorry it didn’t come as naturally as expected – and your poor foot! If it’s any consolation I gave up on windsurfing after my first attempt left me either stood still going nowhere, or knocked into the sea face first! Snorkelling is more my thing 😉

  5. Oh my the Mark Warner holidays do look amazing. Would love to do something like this with my boys in the future.

  6. I tried windsurfing when I was about 16 too, although I was never strong enough for it! I’m impressed that you gave it a go again, but I hope your foot gets better soon 🙂 #whatsthestory

  7. You did so well to try, let alone get about the rest of the holiday! Thank goodness for cocktails! X

  8. Heard a lot about Mark Warner hols. Might look into them now I’m alone with the kids – as they seem to do a lot of activities. Good on you for giving windsurfing a go. I’d love to try it

  9. Oh well done for persevering. It does look a lot of fun (and hard work) me and my body are being to accept that things aren’t what they used to be. Hope you are all ok for your next break (excuse the pun).
